Hotel alla Campagna
Reviewed 16 August 2008

Just got back from staying at the Hotel Alla Campagna and I must say it really made our hoilday. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hotel near Verona. We spent 4 nights there with our 3 children and the owners really made us feel like part of their family! The food in the restaurant was very good and the rooms were all very clean. We learnt some Italian too, which was a real bonus! The hotel is about 6 Km from Verona and it is easy to drive in or cycle in from there.

If you are fed up with soulless city or motorway hotels then this may be just the place for you. The hotel could probably do with a bit of a make-over but it is clean and tidy and has great charm without flashy glamour. It is a small (12 rooms) authentic family-run hotel in a semi-rural setting about 15 minutes south of Verona centre with easy links to the main traffic networks. Breakfast might be a little more imaginative but the choices at dinner are extensive and the food is well prepared and well presented, and the wine list is good. But the best part is the family - Luigi, Mara and Enrico - for whom nothing is too much if help or advice is required. They directed us to places that made our 3 night holiday - especially the trip by car to Venice. If you stay with them Luigi and Mara may sing for you, and it is very listenable!

What a great place to stay when visiting this region. No other hotel puts out such detail information on things to see and do. The family run hotel made my wife and I feel like part of the family. The resturante uses only orgainic food and has a great vegetarian dish.

At first glance there didnt seem anything special about this place.
It is a little out of town. It is a little old fashioned looking. The rooms are comfortable but not the Ritz!
BUT it really is a gem of a place!
I say this because of the extraordinary care and attention to detail displayed by the owners and their staff. Nothing was too much trouble. We were more than welcomed
Food& wine in the restaurant was good. Room was clean and bright and had a lovely outdoor patio. Very clean. Small but good bathroom
It is a family owned hotel. It is a family run hotel. The family love there business... and this makes all the difference.!!

The most striking thing about this small hotel, is the friendliness of the family who run the place. Thoroughly welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. The original founders of the hotel (built about 1990) live for it. They love it. You will not be ignored. Their son is also involved. He waited up for our very late arrival (after midnight due to a delayed flight) and stayed and served our pre-booked light meal, with all the time and attention I'd have expected if we'd been eating during normal hours.

The restaurant was excellent with lovely food and wine. It also caters for non-residents. Breakfast was good without being special - typically continental (we didn't enquire whether they do a cooked breakfast).

This hotel is about 10 minutes drive from the centre of Verona - just getting into the countryside - but don't think that it is in acres of rolling countryside - we're not talking about an absolute idyllic location here. Just decent. There are roads and other properties about. I understand that, out of holiday season, the hotel thrives on catering for business travellers. If I was on business, this is exactly the sort of friendly, personal place I'd want.

I'd say that our room was clean and comfortable, without being absolutely fantastic. Ours was a decent size and it had a nice big balcony for sitting in the sun, or stargazing. No pool or gardens etc. There is a piano and music adds to the atmosphere. The owners will undoubtedly tell you all about their prowess in cutting CDs and appearing on TV. They may even play for you!

We didn't explore the immediate vicinity but it looked like the sort of place that is best suited as a location from which to travel. Didn't ask about busses, but if they're not good, then you need a car or taxi.

We spent two nights there. Went to the famous Arena, to watch the opera (even non-opera buffs like me should do this once in their life.... magical). Hotel arranged taxi for 22 Euro return.... returning in the early hours Then the Sunday, went up to Lake Garda. Really great weekend.

In summary, the hotel is not for everyone - if you like gyms and bells and whistles, then head for the expensive city centre. But for me, it is a perfect, good value base for a business or pleasure trip.
