“Superb position”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2014

The real highlight is the walk from the parador de Vic-Sau, along a woodland path high above the river. From a distance, the monastery is in a fabulous position. Now purely a tourist attraction, it lacks some atmosphere, but the building itself and the situation make it a worthwhile visit

“History come alive”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2014

During our stay in Vic our Catalan guide showed my wife and all the 'must see' places........Vic, Gerona, Barcelona ,Montserrat etc but the visit to this little gem ranks with all of them for atmosphere, surroundings, scenery and the pure pleasure of feeling 'back in time' It was as though the occupants had merely stepped outside for a while so that we could look around.
We could have been the last 3 people left on earth, Pure therapy !

“Attractively sited offering great views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

This monastery is some distance NE outside Vic. It is relatively isolated but there is good road access. It is on a promontory overlooking a the curve of a man made lake. From the parking area (where there is also a restaurant) it is 10 - 15 minute walk to the monastery via one of two paths. There are attractive distant views of the church and from the church. The 11th C church itself is remarkably square and plain, lacking in the typical charm that is the essence of a Romanesque church. There is a rebuilt cloister and a number of interpretive rooms in other church buildings. We visited on a Thursday and it was open (small admission fee), which is important when you want to see the inside of Romanesque churches - many in this region are closed most of the time. This is worth a visit if you are in the area. Some of the buildings were in scaffolding in Oct 2013, but not the church itself.

“Breathtaking views & serene contemplation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 October 2013

This monastery is situated about 8 km outside of the city of Vic (pronounced VEEK) on a promontory at the U-shaped bend of the River Ter (which is now dammed and serves as a reservoir). Because of financial difficulties over the centuries, the structure of the monastery has been very lightly restored and retains the flavor of the 11th century. The interior however boasts a modern presentation of the varied history of this site. Besides the serene, contemplative atmosphere there are breathtaking views of the river and surrounding steep, forested hills. For an even more dramatic vista, do the hour long hike (mostly easy with a short section that is more strenuous) that runs to the Parador. You will be rewarded with a many magnificent views culminating in the view from the front of the hotel. There are restaurants at both the monastery and the parador. If you are short of time, or not able to do the hike, simply take the 5 minute drive between the two.
