I am a wine professional (educator, judge, writer) and visited only one winery in Penedes on a recent trip to Barcelona - namely, Gramona. It was hard to find this gem but with perseverance Iwas ultimately successful. My wife and I arrived unannounced and we were greeted by a knowledgeable, friendly young woman who conducted a thorough tasting of cavas, some still wines and a sparkling icewine-like cuvee (Frisant de Gel) which was quite stunning. Our host's knowledge was deep and there wasn't a question she did not have an answer for or a resource to draw upon: she was engaging and knew what she was talking about - as compared with many cellar-door hosts who simply follow a script. The tasting was exquisite and confirmed my interest in the high-scoring sparkling wines of this family-owned producer. The highlight of the visit was a tour of the caves and a visit to the disgorgement/bottle line. The wines are disgorged without use of freezing and it was a rare opportunity to watch a craftsman pursuing a traditional process. This is a tour for the expert but novices will learn a great deal, in a friendly approachable fashion. My only regret is a I lost the name of our host, so I can't acknowledge her great work by name. BTW, the wines are truly exceptional: they are not your every day cavas, but rather are carefully-crafted wines which are given long aging across the whole line. The sparkling wines have persistent mousse, wonderful brioche aromas and flavour and a long, clean finish.
