Owner description: Set in the ancient heart of the city, opposite the monumental Basilica of Santa María, this imposing new building takes up an entire city block and encompasses the oldest civil construction in the city: the venerable Casa de La Asegurada, an outstanding example of Valencian baroque architecture built as a public wheat granary in 1685. Known as the MACA, the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art is owned by the City Council and is one of Alicante's leading cultural venues. The construction and refurbishment project was designed by the architectural firm Sancho-Madridejos and funded by the Valencian Regional Government. It boasts a total floor space of 4680 m2 spread across four storeys and two basement levels, and features one temporary exhibition hall, four exhibition halls for the permanent collections, a library, teaching venues, an events hall, storerooms, workshops, plus quarters for security, administration and the like. The Museum's diaphanous spaces showcase its rich and varied collections of contemporary art according to highly rigorous museum programming in which conservation and education are given top priority.

MACA is an interesting space, designed around three collections bequeathed to the gallery by two Alicante-born artists. There are two Sempere collections - one of his works and one of the works collected by him. The other was donated by Juana Frances. In addition there are several temporary exhibitions. Probably more than any other kind, contemporary art is a matter of taste. We enjoyed the gouache geometric works by Sempere (top floor), which show a clear developmental progression. We were less taken with the metallic 'optical effect' scultpures, but they are quite accessible. The museum staff give them a generous twirl as you enter for full effect! The permanent exhibits on the second floor include works by famous artists - Dali, Miro, Bacon - but they are not major works. They do form an interesting group as they were collected by one person. We also took in one of the temporary exhibitions but it was mainly arty nude photos and fruit cut in suggestive ways - not exactly original thinking! Summary: worth an hour of anybody's time, more if you appreciate the material. N.B. Open all day from 10.30 to 8.00 so a good 'siesta' option when other stuff is closed.

If you are in Alicante, it is well worth dropping in on MACA. They have some interesting exhibits on permanent display, including two late works by Joan Miró and another fine piece by Juan Muñoz, whose work I love. The exhibition space is over three floors and good use is made of natural light. The Museum was bequeathed three major collections and it is to be hoped that the curators rotate regularly what they choose to put on show. Admission is free. They were just setting up a new temporary exhibition when I visited so I missed out on that.

Really liked this museum, usually I am not a fan of contemporary art in general but there was some really good stuff here.

Knowing very little about art in general did not distract from visiting this museum. The history surrounding the museum is well worth investigating as well as the building itself. Enjoyed viewing the art as it is well set out. Opening times are until 8 so gives you a chance to view after a day at the beach,
