MACA is an interesting space, designed around three collections bequeathed to the gallery by two Alicante-born artists. There are two Sempere collections - one of his works and one of the works collected by him. The other was donated by Juana Frances. In addition there are several temporary exhibitions. Probably more than any other kind, contemporary art is a matter of taste. We enjoyed the gouache geometric works by Sempere (top floor), which show a clear developmental progression. We were less taken with the metallic 'optical effect' scultpures, but they are quite accessible. The museum staff give them a generous twirl as you enter for full effect! The permanent exhibits on the second floor include works by famous artists - Dali, Miro, Bacon - but they are not major works. They do form an interesting group as they were collected by one person. We also took in one of the temporary exhibitions but it was mainly arty nude photos and fruit cut in suggestive ways - not exactly original thinking! Summary: worth an hour of anybody's time, more if you appreciate the material. N.B. Open all day from 10.30 to 8.00 so a good 'siesta' option when other stuff is closed.
