We arrived in Alicante late and, next to our hotel - the Hospes Amerigo, was a tapas bar so we walked in. The owner explained they were not really open but trying dishes out on friends and invited us to stay. Two glasses of wine and some superb food later they refused to let us pay and told us they have another place 'round the corner' - Taberna del Gourmet. So, we went the day after. It was equally good. Some lovely uncomplicated dishes balanced with others showing very capable cooking; and ingredients which have been selected with taste and care for their quality. Excellent wine too. This is not a cheap option but it is very, very high quality and very capably served and presented. I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend this restaurant and all the signs are that their new venture will be just as good. You can get cheaper, but I haven't found better in the city.
