We are so happy that we found this place for our first week on Lanzarote. Máguez is far away from the tourism centers and it is the place to be if you want to experience what the island is all about. A number of hiking trails begin pretty much right at the doorstep, and if you don't mind the 1,5km stroll to Haria you can do all your shopping, dining and visit the Casa Museo Manrique without ever using the car. Other major attractions like the Mirador del Rio or the Lava Caves are only a short drive away.
Not that you have to go anywhere for great sights: From the upstairs terrace the panoramic view goes across the valley toward Haria with the sea to the left and the ridge line of the Famara cliffs to the right. If you are up for it, you can enjoy both sunrise and sunset sitting on the couch up here. Another highlight is the very private ship-shaped garden, which presumably gave the house its name. It's fully enclosed by lava stone walls and nicely private.
The house itself is spacious, charming and fully equipped, showing the host's great attention for detail. We found everything to be in perfect working condition and the absence of central heating was no issue at all - once we got the hang of starting the fire, with help from Carlos.
Speaking of whom: Maria and Carlos are very approachable hosts, who go out of their way to help you in any way possible.
Being back home in Frankfurt now and putting together this review, we have the distinct feeling that this was not our last stay at Casa el Barco de Piedra - our little ship-shaped castle on the hill ;-)
