“Not as good as we had hoped it would be”
Reviewed 10 February 2018 for a stay in January 2018

We spent a week there in January. The following are just our feelings.

Good points: Location, Haria a lovely town, views from villa, heated indoor pool, welcome basket, Marcus is very friendly and knowledgeable, 2 nice friendly dogs and 2 wonderful cats.

Not so good: The villa forms part of the owners accommodation with its own front door but they are above and next to you. Even the en-suite toilet window which has clear glass looks into one of there windows. As its in the north of the island a bit cooler than the south, this would be ideal in the summer but not so in the winter. Even at nearly £100 a night for a couple we had to supply wood for the log burner, toilet roll, washing machine and dishwasher tablets. Iron board was broken albeit swiftly replaced. Oven was too dirty too use. One toilet could not be used and the other had a broken flush. Water heater too small, ran cold on second persons shower. Non slip bathmats would be good as well.

Needless to say we are really disappointed to end our run of 36 out of 36 "5 Star” reviews. We’re even more disappointed as we feel that so many of your negative points are unjustified and in some cases, totally untrue.

You openly admitted soon after you arrived that the house was the wrong choice for you and that it was "far too remote" for your liking. A day later you explained to me that you had taken a drive to the nearest resort - Costa Teguise. This was not to your liking either as there were “too many people”. It was clear at this point that you were going to be impossible to please.

We are talking to Trip Advisor about having your review removed as it contains false statements, but in the meantime - to cover the points you’ve raised;

“The villa forms part of the owners accommodation with its own front door but they are above and next to you” We live next door to the casita and this is made very clear in the property description (which you don’t appear to have read). Whilst the two houses are technically joined, it’s only our rarely used upstairs dining room which sits above part of the Casita lounge. All sound proofed and very solid.

“Even the en-suite toilet window which has clear glass looks into one of there windows” There is only one casita window overlooking our side. You have to be looking through the casita bathroom window at an angle for this to be the case. Our window has a blind which is permanently down for that exact reason. The Kitchen, all bedrooms, lounge, dining room and hall ways are 100% private and in no way looked on by our property.

“As its in the north of the island a bit cooler than the south, this would be ideal in the summer but not so in the winter”. Generally true (by 1 or 2 degrees). Any research ahead of booking would support this.

“Even at nearly £100 a night for a couple we had to supply wood for the log burner, toilet roll, washing machine and dishwasher tablets. Iron board was broken albeit swiftly replaced”.

You booked a ‘self catering’ house. I’m not convinced that you understand what this means. We spend around 40 euro’s prior to each arrival on making sure that our guests have a minimum of tea, coffee, milk, water, beers, wine, olives, nuts, jam, crisps, fresh bread, butter, ham, cheese, tonic water, lemons and ice. On top of this guests have an entire bar to enjoy, we simply ask each guest to replace what they drink on an honesty basis. In addition we make sure that our guests have enough logs for the first three nights of stay. The house has 3 brand new DeLonghi electric heaters which are ample to heat the house and bedrooms as an alternative to the Log Burner if you didn’t want to buy more logs.

This is not common in self catering houses, but we do this because we like to make sure that each visitor feels as welcome as possible. You were quick to knock on our door demanding more dish washer tablets, The 4 we left you seemed to have been used in less than 24 hours which seemed odd, but we handed you a further 4 regardless. Toilet roll - every bathroom (3 in total) had a full loo roll for you. As I explained, if you wanted more, you only had to ask. This is where we feel that we are unduly having to explain ourselves when there is no complaint to be made.

"Oven too dirty to use" - There was a half burned chip in the gutter of the  base of the oven which I missed when cleaning it (I take full responsibility and I did at the time). To say the oven was ‘too dirty to use’ is utter nonsense and truly nit picking.

Ironing board - you complained this was not right for you either and I handed you a new one immediately.

"One toilet could not be used” - Absolutely untrue. The downstairs en-suite bathroom works perfectly. We simply ask that no paper is put into the toilet and that a waste bin is used. Its very common in Lanzarote, and even more so in Haria where the systems are old and sometimes struggle to handle paper. The other two bathrooms can handle paper no problem, yet you focus on the one which is attached to a bedroom you didn’t even use during your stay. Just another opportunity to complain….

One toilet could not be used and the other had a broken flush. The loo flushes perfectly well. The button was unfortunately broken by a previous guest and we’re waiting on a replacement. I explained this when you checked in and demonstrated it working perfectly well, although granted, its not as it should be aesthetically.

Water heaters - we have had families of 6 stay and never had this issue. You seem by this stage intent on finding fault with the house in any way possible.

In summery, the fact is, from the moment you arrived you realised that the house was too remote for your liking. You made no secret that you were unhappy about this. It’s made very clear in the description that the house, whilst within walking distance of bars and restaurants, is a rural property.

We’re extremely disappointed that you chose Casita Palmera and left our first negative review, particularly when its based on untruths and false claims.

Can we suggest you read up fully on future properties you intend to rent and the area they are located in for the sake of other house owners.

“Perfect stay”
Reviewed 6 January 2018 for a stay in December 2017

What a great house! Exceeded our expectations. The social areas were brilliant for our group. It has a lovely heated pool, the views are stunning and Haría is a great spot. Marcus was súper helpful before and during our stay. He helped us organise equipment for our babies and car hire. We miss the cats and dog, Chester and Bob are the sweetest. We had a fantastic stay and would love to come back.

“House in Haria”
Reviewed 29 December 2017 for a stay in December 2017

We loved our stay, and Marcus is an excellent host. The house is in the most beautiful part of the island and Haria is a charming village. There are several beautiful beaches in easy reach and the walking is wonderful. Marcus really respects his guests privacy - yet he was very reachable and helpful when ever we needed something. The house was very clean, the layout works well and made for a great family holiday.

“Loved every minute”
Reviewed 13 December 2017 for a stay in December 2017

This is our second return visit to Casita Palmera and its every bit as good as our first.

Some upgrades have happened since our last visit in terms of the outdoor furniture and BBQ dining area which is all very nice indeed along with a brand new dining table and chairs in the dining room.

Being December its obviously a lot cooler then when we last visited but the heated pool is superb and we have used it every day.

By night we light the log burner and candles and enjoy feet up, red wine and great films.

Just the perfect, well needed, pre Christmas break.

Thank you to Marcus and Heidi for our welcome hamper and being so kind in general, you really do go the extra mile and its hugely appreciated.

We have already discussed it and we think a 3rd visit is highly likely….

“The Perfect Stay”
Reviewed 5 December 2017 for a stay in November 2017

Marcus and Heidi are warm and endlessly thoughtful hosts who made our stay truly memorable and spectacular; they really did everything possible and then some in honor and celebration of my parents’ 75th birthdays.

Casita Palmera is a well-furnished and extremely comfortable home, not just a holiday rental, and it felt like staying at the home of a dear friend while he or she happened to be away. All the appliances functioned well and the furnishings were in excellent condition. The terrace overlooking the gardens with palm trees with flowering bushes lead one to the heated and generously sized swimming pool that can be used anytime. The hosts’ two affectionate and playful dogs added a wonderful touch, clearly a reflection of their owners, as well.

Marcus warmly welcomed us when we arrived and we were really delighted to see that he had supplied the basics of water, coffee, tea and making for sandwiches (and even toilet paper) - truly a gesture we appreciated after 15 hours of travel with my parents.

Marcus and Heidi were genuinely interested in our feedback and immediately addressed every suggestion with a thoughtful response, including a request for additional utensils in the kitchen and even darker window coverings for one of the bedroom windows.

Casita Palmera is located away from the tourist zones and high rises in the South in the charming little village of Haria, within a ten minute drive of excellent local restaurants and the local cultural attractions of Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, the Cesar Manrique House and the Mirador del Rio. The local artisanal food market is a treasure and we visited almost daily for produce and baked goods, though meat and fish are only available certain days.

I cannot begin to say how much we appreciated our stay and extend heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to hosts Marcus and Heidi for such a wonderful experience.

“Delightful Villa and Ideal Base for Discovering Lanzarote”
Reviewed 14 November 2017 for a stay in November 2017

We spent a lovely week here on our first visit to Lanzarote. The house is quite superb, much bigger than it looks and with all the amenities you need for your stay. Marcus and Heidi, who live in the other half of the building, are the perfect hosts and on hand for advice and tips that will enhance your holiday. The heated pool is great and thanks to the cover remains at a constant warm temperature even in the cooler months. The location is good too if you prefer somewhere quiet and away from the big resorts. The village centre is a five minute walk away and has a number of restaurants and shops and the island is small enough that you don't have to drive far to get to the attractions that the island has to offer. There is a bus service to Haria but we would say a hire car is pretty much essential. Marcus will help you out on that score too. We are happy to highly recommend this property.

Thank you for your 5 star review, we really appreciate it!
We just wanted to make it clear to readers that we live in the house next door - not 'in the other half of the building' - Casita Palmera is a private house in its own right. We just wanted to make that clear! Thanks again, you were great guests!!! :-)

“Beautiful holiday home”
Reviewed 2 November 2017 for a stay in October 2017

We spent a week in this holiday home in the lovely little town of Haria- Casita Palmera had everything we needed. It is well equipped for cooking and the owner supplies the basics like salt and pepper and olive oil, not to mention a very generous welcome pack on arrival including cheese, meats, snacks and beer.
The setting is lovely - lots of space for our 4 year old to run around and explore, a great barbecue area and a big swimming pool, which can be completely covered and locked when not in use, making it totally safe for small children and peace of mind for parents!
The owner lives next door but is unobtrusive - unless you need advice or recommendations for things to do or places to eat, of which he has lots! He also has 2 cats and a dog which also keeps the kids entertained, and makes it feel like you really are staying in a home, not just a holiday rental.

We'll be booking again for next year!
