Owner description: Maipés Archaeological Park is located in the village of Agaete in the north west of Gran Canaria. Maipés is a volcanic lava plain in which a burial ground used by the ancient inhabitants of the island is preserved. There are almost 700 tombs, some of which were constructed over 1.300 years ago.

Very pleased to have visited. "Maipes" is the badlands - the volcanic rocks are not good enough to grow anything - and is an ancient burial ground dating back many centuries.
Recently excavated and opened to visitors it is a fascinating display.
My only word of advice is ignore the tripadvisor location! Follow that and you'll be on entirely the wrong side of the island!!! Maipes is on the edge of Agaete next to the football ground.

Fascinating site, really well presented and laid out. Informative displays, clear and with English translation. Really worth the effort, a most unusual attraction

A really interesting open-air museum on and about the burial site and practices of the pre-Hispanic inhabitants. Really worth a visit!
