L'Escale is handily placed for a stopover en route from UK to the South of France, being some 3 hours from Calais and 5 minutes from the autoroute. We stayed here on our way south and again on our way north, on two consecutive Saturday nights.
The welcome the first week was friendly and pleasant, although the restaurant and bar were closed in the evening. (The hotel seems set up to operate on a Mon-Thurs basis, suggesting it is more popular with business travellers than with tourists.) The following week even the hotel was closed, with a sign on the main door telling us the code to enter the hotel, with our key left in the room door.
The breakfast was serviceable, although €7 was rather more than it was worth. The 2nd week's breakfast was very basic and the girl who arrived to lay everything out was clearly very unhappy with her lot. Even my appallingly bad French didn't tempt a smile from her.
We'd booked a "Superior" room for €60, having read reports on TripAdvisor of how small the rooms were, but I'm not sure it would have made a great difference. The room was basic and minimalist in the extreme, but useful for a simple overnight stay. A better hotel would have tempted us to hang around for longer, which would only have delayed our travel plans. On the other hand, a Formula 1 or Best Hotel would have been just as functional at a lower price.
The buckets in the corridor suggests the roof leaks when it rains and I suspect the corrugated iron roofing would be noisy. We didn't like the windows only being able to be open or closed - there was no security device to prevent someone from simply climbing into the room, but with no air-con the window had to be open overnight. The shower was very good.
As the hotel is right at the end of the runway of a small airport it is very quiet and peaceful, with no late night or early morning flights at the times we were staying. The restaurant offers views over the airfield, which is pretty first thing in the morning.
Eating in the local area seems limited to a Courtpaille chain restaurant (expensive grill/burgers) or an interesting Asian styled all-you-can-eat for €16 buffet place.
