“Towels and Cleanliness”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2013

I stayed overnight and had a beautiful shower in the morning, only to wipe my face with a supposedly clean towel which in fact had faeces on it and this was dismissed and laughed at when brought to the attention of hosts when it came time to pay the bill....Not at all impressed.
One good thing beautiful village.

We arrived earlier than check in time but that was no problem at all. The owner let us park in the private parking area under the shade and also checked us in too which was very kind. The breakfast was traditional perhaps a little smaller than some places but adequate nonetheless and the service was attentive. Thankyou.

We had a delightful stay. This hotel is ideally located for anyone travelling across France, and Argenton (in George Sand country) is worth a few days' stopover. But the best thing was the Manoir, a really charming old house just near the Creuse (we had a nice view from our bedroom, no. 3). No restaurant but the very kind and helpful hosts are happy to recommend one; we ate at Les Diables au Thym (a pun on "diablotin") and had one of the best seafood casseroles on earth. very reasonable, like the hotel itself. Unfortunately our handicapped son forgot his keys, travel and bank cards and basically everything in the room; Madame found his number and called even before we found it missing, and put it in the post the same afternoon.

I CANNOT imagine what sort of attitude other reviewers must have arrived with, to get anything but kindness and good humor out of this couple. People in the Center of France are not as effusive as those in the South; but, as in the American Midwest or Midlands of England, a reserved exterior sometimes hides more genuine kindness than "hi Hawya doin'?"....

I found this a magical place , tucked away near the river with its old world courtyard and walled garden. The hotel was what you would expect from a three star plus or even four so was not particularily luxurious but was old fashioned French. The hosts were not effusive but were agreeable and I had a long chat with Madame about hose pipe bans , I think. To my mind better than the logis on offer outside the town which looked like motels and it enabled us to look around the delightful town and choose somewhere good to eat. Secure parking big plus for us. And what is wrong with canned orange juice for breakfast , you very rarely get it these days , its all that Tropicanna stuff and you could be anywhere in the world.

We stayed one night on our way back up to the Tunnel in this hotel having booked it online. the room for 4 was two double beds and was very smart and comfortable. Very nice bathroom, immaculate throughout. You can pay 5 euros extra to park your car in their tiny carpark otherwise it's the street. We paid the 110 Euros as there was an outdoor swimming pool we were hoping to use but sadly the weather was too nippy. We didn't go for the breakfast as 8 euros for a french style breakfast seemed exhorbitant. The couple who we presume own it are fairly elderly, and give the impression that really they've had enough, and are sort of doing you a favour.
Short walk into the town centre where there are loads of nice places to eat. I would describe this as 'good' except Tripadvisor don't have that category! It's above average but not very good, if you see what I mean.

Argenton is a very nice, pretty place to break a trip to the south of France or Spain. First impressions of the hotel are good. it has a pool and a terrace. Rooms a fine. Nothing special. it is a old building where everything is of wood so you hear your neighboors. The owner wasn't very interested in us. He seemed to be bored with running this hotel. Parking cost € 5,- but there is a parking around the corner for free.

Room Tip: Upper floor.

We made the reservation for this hotel at least 3 weeks in advance. We stated specifically to the Madame that we required secure parking and a room to accommodate two well travelled dogs. We were two couples travelling together in two old cars all around France. We had a pleasant conversation with the Madame about our trip and why these requests were necessary, one car could not be locked securely and she was jovial and very welcoming at this time. Once we were near Argenton, our friends were having mechanical problems. I called the Madame, stated who we were as per our previous conversation and let her know that we'd be about an hour later than anticipated, but that we were definitely coming, she said it was no problem. Once we arrived, the weather turned nasty and rainy, but we made our way through the narrow back streets to find a very pretty setting, nice manor house and a completely full parking lot. We pulled in to the smaller second lot and the Monsieur came out of the house, waving his arms demanding we back out immediately. We got out of the car and explained that we had reserved a parking area for our cars. He would have nothing of it and just kept shouting. Finally, the Madame arrived at the front door and also directed us out, albeit in a more calm tone. She informed us we'd have to park on the street. We finally talked her into letting us at least park the smaller (AH Sprite) in a small cove if we promised to take full responsibility for it...the second car was left outside the walled parking area. After a stressful day, we asked if we could have a few drinks in the garden before walking to dinner. We were served, but the dogs were not allowed into the garden...this is the only space at this hotel besides the packed parking area. The next morning, we were off to the breakfast room and were told dogs were not permitted there either, nor could we have breakfast in our spacious room. So as it rained, my husband took the dogs out while I ate, I took them outside in the rain while he ate. However, we both separately ''enjoyed'' the company of the three rambuncious 3 to 4 year olds who screeched and cried during breakfast.

For the hotel, it was clean and nicely located. The rooms were spacious and the decor interestingly dated, but charming enough. The proprietors were not. We made arrangements with them stating exactly what our situation was and they were in total agreement when the reservation was made, we didn't have our parking as promised, nor was this a dog friendly hotel as stated. It was a real disappointment as it was one of the first of our journey, happy to say though everything that followed was very good to terrific.
