“Best restaurant in St Chinian”
Reviewed 8 June 2013

We have a holiday home just outside St Chinian. In our opinion this is the best restaurant in St Chinian, especially since Le Village restaurant has changed hands recently and become an "OKish" creperie. The staff at La Caleche are very pleasant and helpful and can speak English and Dutch if you cant speak any French ( but do try to speak French if you can.... its only polite!). The food is always fresh although the menu doesn't change very often. Good , reasonably priced wine list. You will certainly need to book a day or two in advance during July and August.

“It doesn't get much better”
Reviewed 15 May 2013

This is our third trip to St Chinian and our first time at La Caleche. And it didn't disappoint. Probably our best meal in France to date. I had the foie gras with sweet onion marmalade, stunning, followed by the beef, marinated in 5 red berry sauce. Small but packed with sweet flavours and probably the most perfectly cooked steak I've ever had. Karyn had the parcels of warm goats cheese drizzled with honey. i was lucky to get a taste. she then had the duck in what was a light honey marinade plus a surprise... A small dollop of ice cream, which was wonderful. And again, cooked perfectly. The restaurant was warm and cosy, our waitress, the only one mind you, was wonderful, attentive and timed everything to perfection. As busy as it was she smiled the whole evening and even responded charmingly to our feeble attempts at French. We're going back to try more of their quite wonderful menu.

“What a Find”
Reviewed 9 March 2013 via mobile

As we are staying in Saint Chinian for the week we decided to try La Caleche. Although at this time of year the opening times seem to vary we found it open on the Saturday evening. Although small it feels spacious with ample room between the tables. The ambience was just right and the waitress was friendly, welcoming and very helpful. We were seated so that we were not on top of other diners, but obviously that could be different in the main season. We had the Menu for €22, which comprises of a starter and a main course. For €28 you get a sweet as well. The food was delightful, for starters I had the warm goats cheese in filo pastry with a green salad covered in a tasty dressing. My husband had the ham bruschetta and green salad. For our main courses I had the rack of lamb which was cooked just to my liking and served with creamy mashed potatoes and ratatouille. My husband had the steak, which he said melted in the mouth (the first time ever he has shown such enthusiasm for a meal!), also served with the mashed potato and ratatouille. We ordered a carafe of the house rose for €6 which was very palatable. All in all a great little find. And if staying in the area I would most certainly eat here again and would recommend it to others.

“lovely meal”
Reviewed 10 September 2012

A varied french style menu and tasy well cooked meal. Was reasonably priced for the standard of cuisine. However the single waitress was charming and helpful but clearly doing the work of two! Another waitress would have increased speed of service, which was undertstandably slow
