“Wonderful weekend getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2014

My boyfriend and I had a fantastic time at Martyn and Chrissy's hideaway. The Gardener's Lodge looks unassuming from the outside but is a perfectly self-contained bedroom and en-suite: clean, cosy and inviting with the obvious benefit of privacy away from the main house. It is small so if you're aiming to spend a lot of time inside, perhaps one of the other rooms would suit better. We however were keen to get out and make the most of our time in the New Forest which we did with numerous lovely walks (to numerous lovely pubs!) and horse-riding round the corner at Arniss Riding School. We were beginners, and very well treated here with a gentle one-hour ride to the top of some spectacular hills. Martyn and Chrissy could not be better hosts, striking just the right balance between helpful and independent. The breakfasts were first-class, and their recommendations about what to do in the local area invaluable. We even managed a trip to Stonehenge on our way back to London. Finally, what Chrissy and Martyn have done with their home and land (all built by them, some 15 years ago) is truly inspiring. Good on them!

Thank you for all your lovely comments, it is so nice to know that guests appreciate the effort we have put in, to try to make everything as perfect as possible. Hopefully you will visit us again and if you do may we suggest the Chauffeurs Lodge which still has easy chairs, dining table and chairs, fridge, etc. but with a 6 ft super king bed and a larger floor area. Regards Chrissy & Martyn

We had a brilliant time staying here for a long weekend last month. The room was beautiful, very clean and comfy, and had all the conveniences you would want. Martyn and Chrissy made us feel incredibly welcome and went out of their way to help us make the most of our stay. Chrissy's breakfasts are also well worth a mention as they were truly delicious! Going back to toast and cereal was tough after being so spoiled all weekend! The New Forest is right on the doorstep with lots of stunning walks and cosy pubs to stop into for lunch. We couldn't recommend Kingfisher retreat highly enough - we're hoping to go back soon!

This accommodation was right up my street - a little lodge with its own front door, completely detached, wonderfully private with outstanding views of the lake. I couldn't have chosen anywhere better. The interior was beautifully furnished and freshly decorated. The location was ideal and we enjoyed a brisk 4.5 mile forest walk to the quaintest little pub with log fires and first class 'ploughmans'. For an evening meal we went to The George in Fordingbridge which is situated right on the river and serves very good food. There was not much to not like about KIngfisher Retreat, however we did think there was an over-kill of do's and don'ts. There were so many labels with wording in capital letters and underlined which really rubbed off the charm. Breakfast was to a good standard but there was very little interaction about what we would like on our plate. We weren't asked what we would like for breakfast apart from when we very first arrived before we had unpacked our cases. Both these points, the labels and the breakfast made us feel that we had to fit in with Martyn and Chrissy rather than they provide us with a service. In spite of this though we would highly recommend Kingfisher Retreat as it has so much going for it and can almost guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

We are very sorry that you did not find everything to your satisfaction. We really do not want to have any notices in our rooms, after all this is our home. Unfortunately we have found that we have to for the following reasons. a) Most people live with main drainage and can flush what they like, we have our own treatment plant and certain items will bring it to a halt with drastic consequences (especially for me as I have to unblock it if I can) so we advise what can be flushed. b) We did not originally have a "No Smoking" sign so people did, not nice for the next guests, we have used our notice to advise guests where they can smoke around our garden.
c) Our guests can control the heating for their comfort but we found that guests were leaving the heating full on with the windows open, as this is not very enviromentally friendly and increases costs which would eventually affect our prices we ask guests not to do this, its sad that we need to! d) There is a porch light for the convenience of our guests, as the policy of the national park is to minimise light pollution we ask our guests to turn this off when they go to bed, not unreasonable.
We have tried to find alternatives to some of our notices and following your comments we have reconsidered this, we could put timers on the heating and the outside lighting as they now do in many hotels but we like our guests to be able to return to a warm chalet with a welcoming light outside.
With regard to the breakfast we leave a menu with choices in the room so our guests know what is availiable, we ask our guests what time they would like breakfast when they arrive so that we do not have to interupt their privacy after we have shown them to their lodge.
We are sorry that you thought the lodge looked like a shed, its built in the theme of an alpine chalet out of very substantial timbers with a hand made clay tile roof and it was a very expensive quality building!

Great accommodation and attention to detail. We stayed in the Chauffeurs Lodge which was immaculate and very comfortable. Martyn and Chrissy are very welcoming and helpful. Stunning grounds and location. Very reasonably priced. What more can you ask for? We will be back!

We don't really want to tell you how wonderful it is because we don't want to share it!! However, a good quality hotel could learn lessons here. The only complaint was how quickly a weekend can pass. Thank you Chrissy and Martyn for a weekend we will remember for a very long time. We will be back as soon a we can!

What a wonderful stay.. A beautiful house surrounded by stunning gardens and its very own lake made our special two night trip something to remember. Not only was the bedroom well equipped and cosy, the hosts Chrissy and Martyn were very welcoming and happy to accommodate our every need... From finely poached eggs to The New Forest delights!!!
We will certainly return to this magical retreat, you truly couldn't ask for more.
Thanks to you both. Will be back soon

This was our second visit and this time we brought friends so that they could see why we enjoyed it so much! We have stayed in the Chauffeur's Lodge and the Gardener's lodge - both very clean, comfortable and private. Chrissy and Martyn couldn't be more friendly and accommodating, offering lots of helpful advice and local tips. We had a fabulous meal at The Forresters - go there if you can. We are sure to return.
