Description: The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.

“Family dinner”
Reviewed 29 December 2013

We booked a few days in advance based on previous Trip reviews and were not disappointed .The pub /restaurant has lots of character and we were welcomed on entry .Had some good ales in pub area in front of the fire before going into the adjacent dining area -also another log fire .Small menu with variety and good local produce - Shared some roast veg and a cold fish platter for starters. The steak was excellent and the veg cooked perfectly .The waitress was very attentive and helpful .Will return when back in the area

“Warm welcome & tasty food”
Reviewed 18 December 2013

We pre-booked the week before for a dinner on a Monday evening, and a good job too as the place was full bar one table for two - on a Monday night! In a way that says it all. The welcome was warm, both from the staff and the lovely log fire we were placed besides. Nothing was too much trouble, service really was attentive without being intrusive, but also at the end pleasantly interested in where we were staying and why we had gone there (turned out we were staying directly opposite where the restaurant girl lived!) The food was excellent, with good choice for the vegetarian of the party. All was presented well and interestingly, with good sensible sized portions, so of course we had space after two courses for the puddings, which sent us to heaven! It's not the cheapest place, but that is fine as we felt we had extremely good value for money with the quality of food and lovely ambiance. Thank you!

“English ambience at its best”
Reviewed 8 December 2013 via mobile

Just been to the R&T for the very first time, for Sunday lunch. It was a perfect experience from start to finish.
Firstly, the food.... Soup of the day for me and crevettes for my wife who said "in Mallorca the crevettes would be nowhere as good as this and twice the price". Then roast beef with heavenly gravy and the best side-dish of vegetables we've had for many years. This was all accompanied by ice-cold water and a superb bottle of red wine.
Then I succumbed to the dessert menu and had Queen-of-Puddings (my wife had home-made ice-cream). Now.... I remember visiting an aunt in Hove in the 1950s who always made Q-of-P specially for me. I have spent a lifetime talking about it. Today, the Q-of-P at the Rose & Thistle equalled, in fact exceeded, my aunt's famous version. I would return again just for that!
The service was perfectly attentive, the atmosphere was so relaxing and the food/wine was amazing value for money..... as for the Q-of-P, I've run out of superlatives!!

Thank you so much for your fantastic review - it was a pleasure to meet yourself and your wife on Sunday and to see how much you enjoyed your food! The team and myself really enjoy getting good feedback and I have to say that this really made our Monday morning when it was posted! I do hope to see you again soon and will try and encourage the chef not to change the pudding menu at least until you have had one more Q-of P's!!
