Description: The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.

“Great food and friendly service”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

Met quickly by staff in the restaurant and offered complimentary water instead of over priced Ho2. I plumped for the Fordling seafood plate as did my friend, light and refreshing. For mains we had Steak and Kidney Suet Pudding and Pulled Pork in Brioche with Chips. Both were ample, tasty and served promptly. The only criticism would be the side vegetables that need a bit more work. The deserts need to carry a government health warning, they were superb! Both leaving us feeling a little full, however, if you want good British food with good service in a lovely surround, choose The Rose and Thistle.

Thanks for your lovely review, sorry it has taken me so long to respond. We are all really happy you enjoyed your time with us. Sorry you felt the vegetables were not up to scratch; usually people are very complementary about them and we try to do different to the norm, maybe this just was not to your taste. Hopefully next time you visit everything will be up to scratch.

“Mind Blowingly under rated”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

Myself and four other guests stumbled across this little gold mind whilst camping in the area and WOW.

We walked in half an hour before the end of service to be greeted with open arms and accommodated with the warmest of welcomes. We were seated and offered the hugely selected menu filled with a local, well chosen spread of foods that blew this 'hard to please' party away. It's fair to say we were not expecting such a variety.

So far we were happy with the surroundings, the service, the atmosphere, the menu, the wine and just about everything was perfect... but we doubted the food would be as good.

The food came out and we literally were blown away, the flavours that came out of each and every dish was something that needs to be sung about, personally I had the Pork Belly, which was cooked to perfection, texulised in the rich flavours matched perfectly with the creamy mash and complemented with the large bowl of vegetables that was offered with each meal.
Around the table guests had the Pigeon, which was described as tender and delicately balanced in flavour and the Veal and Ham pie described as being 'beautifully crafted encapsulating a flavourful, mouth watering filling'.

We made know secret that it was one of the better meals we had eaten and for myself, this is not a statement I offer likely. It is a place worth travelling miles for. A treasure chest that i have no doubt candidates for award winning.

Truly Amazing.

Thank you,

Paul, Nick, Tom, Kayleigh and Vic. xx

Paul, Nick, Tom, Kayleigh and Vic... What can I say but thank you so much. Such glowing feedback after the standing ovation you gave your food is truly gratifying for myself and the whole team. I do hope that if you are ever in the area again you will call in for another meal!

“Perfect Sunday celebration”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We've just visited The Rose and Thistle following a recommendation from a friend and we are very happy that we did. Every person in our party (there were 6 of us) thoroughly enjoyed each of the three courses that we had for lunch. The croquettes, roast beef and homity pie were outstanding. The service was genuinely friendly and helpful and well timed throughout our meal. We will definitely be going back.

“Lovely Sunday lunch.”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

We came here for Sunday lunch after trying a few weeks ago when it was fully booked. My partner is a chef and we have been trying to find the perfect Sunday roast for months now only to be disappointed everywhere we go. I can safety say that our quest has now come to an end! We went to the chewton glen last Sunday and the roast we had today was so much better. The roast beef was lovely and the vegetables were way more exciting than your average. My only small criticism was the roast potatoes. Apart from that it was a cracking meal. Service was very good and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy. Definitely book though or you may be disappointed.
