Very pleasant country pub with a good range of ales. Menu seems quite dated/ trad pub grub until you find the specials on the blackboard - when the selection becomes vast and the food was excellent. Fish and chips to be recommended.

We visited this pub having seen it on our way to Sandy Balls. I have read other reviews and would agree with some comments however, this is a country pub in the New Forest for walkers with muddy boots etc so maybe a little grubby. The food is expensive but the dessert board is pretty good.

Awful place!
Terrible food!
Disgusting owners/proprietors!
Distasteful decor!
Disgracefully expensive!
Feel sorry for the youngsters that work there who are treated unfairly by the abusive landlord/lady!
DO NOT VISIT!!!

My partner and I tend to use this pub as it's within walking distance to Sandy Balls, the pub itself is a bit tatty and has seen better days and yes the staff do look a a bit scruffy but I assume they are students so it's not surprising...... (saying that they are all very polite and helpful). The food is normally very good and portions are large and home-made (I have to agree with an earlier reviewer though, avoid the Cajun chicken, it's a bit bland). If you have a big appetite (and I mean big) order the mixed grill, this has to be done in advance and costs £22 but trust me it's worth it! The plate is the size of a serving platter and the quality of the meats was first class. The desserts are also fantastic but you can forget about them if you order the mixed grill!

In short, traditional pub, good for walkers and dog owners during the day, handy for Sandy Balls guests if you fancy a meal without having to take the car out, families welcome and good home-made food.

Visited The Fighting Cocks with my wife and 13 month old daughter, on a Sunday afternoon, while we were staying locally at Sandy Balls. The staff were scruffy and displayed little in the way of service (one waitress's head was partly shaved and tattooed!!). I ordered a Steak and Cajun Chicken for my wife. We waited around 40 mins for these to arrive and it certainly wasn't wort the wait! The portions of chips with both meals were tiny and bone dry. The steak was also dry, and bordering on cremated, when i'd asked for medium-rare. My wifes "Cajun" Chicken was laughable. The chef has simply sprinkled some spices on a dry bit of chicken and charged £12 for it. When i complained about the value, i was told "i don't make the prices!!". We eventually got the chips replaced, but had to persevere with the Steak and Chicken. Such a pity, as The Fighting Cocks has great potential....
