“First Featherdown Farm - Thumbs Up!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2012

We've just returned from a great weekend at Midgham Farm. It was our first Featherdown Farm experience and we had a fabulous time. The facilities were great, there was plenty to do and the sun shone! The children thoroughly enjoyed collecting eggs, feeding the lambs and brushing the horses and they disappeared into the woods for hours at a time to make dens and dam streams. They also enjoyed the rope swing and trampoline. The farm tour was a real highlight and Sammy made us all feel very welcome. We'll definitely be back again!

Room Tip: We stayed in Chestnut which got lots of afternoon sun.

We had a lovely time at Midgham. Our second Featherdown trip and daughter (12) voted it 10/10. Sammy couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. My daughter had a super time playing with the other children in the woods and in the streams. Once you have unpacked your car you leave it at the farm so the woods remain enjoyably quiet and a safe place for the children to play and you transport wood etc (and children!) in wheelbarrows. This a great farm for chilldren - at this time of year there were lambs to bottle feed, and a newborn foal, and there are miniature ponies, rabbits and chickens and pigs to feed, a rope swing and a trampoline. There is a lovely spot for picnics and paddling in the river Avon (sadly weather didn't permit us to) which would be fantastic in summer. And in April bluebells everywhere- our tent looked out on a woodland track lined with them. The farm tour in the pick up was fun - feeding ponies and visiting alpacas.
If you want to do day trips Salisbury and Bournmouth are very close and the New Forest is right there on your doorstep. A well stocked farm shop means you don't need to go anywhere if you don't want to. We enjoyed Sammy's sausages and bacon and the farm eggs. We had lots of April showers and windy eventings but with a stove and duvets and blankets it was cosy. We'd certainly consider coming back in summer. Highly reccomended.

Our third Featherdown Farm break and definately the best yet. Great location, lovely hosts - couldn't have done more for us. Children enjoyed bottle feeding lambs, collecting fresh eggs from the chickens, pony grooming, the fabulous farm tour (where my husband lost his sunglasses after they got pinged off by a low lying branch - but helpfully everyone stopped to find them again), petting/chasing bunnies for cuddles - I could go on and on. The rope swing and the trampoline were also big hits.

The honesty shop was the biggest I've seen and what a range! Lots of lovely locally produced items along with key items. The showers were gorgeous - straight out of a catalogue and so clean.

Above all though, the host Sammy, her daughter and the two farmhands were so welcoming and helpful. It was really cold the first night and they gave us extra duvets, they took time to check in on us and ensure everything was working and that we were happy.

The tents are set in a stunning wood full to bursting with bluebells, pretty streams and wicked dens for the kids to play in. We stayed in Holly- what a fabulous outlook.

All in all, brilliant. Thoroughly recommend. Kids didn't want to come home....

Oh and by the way Bournemouth is pretty close by - we left home early and spent the day on the beach and in the oceanarium and then went to the farm for the 4pm arrival time. Lovely. Fordingbridge is also pretty and has some nice shops.

We had an amazing week at Midgham Farm with our 4 yrs old. We stayed in Holly and loved the whole experience of camping in the tent. Sammy and her family were really good at showing us around and our son loved riding in her pick-up truck. The farm shop has the best porkchops and the wide selection is v good. We recommend it to all.

Room Tip: Book Holly and get some camping lights

Our stay at Midgham Farm, Fordingbridge could not have been better! The site was incredible, the tents hidden picturesquely in the woods with a great deal of privacy and a warm welcome to the farm from Sammy, who was always there to help us out, but never intruded. The tents were very spotlessly clean and comfortable and having a bed, loo and sink definitely make it a luxurious camping experience. Our 6 children (2 families in 2 tents) all agreed that "glamping" beats camping and the adults did too! A fabulous farm shop, a great farm tour and plenty to keep us busy on site meant that we didn't feel the need to venture far, although there's lots to do nearby. This is a wonderful experience for the whole family, especially if you love the outdoors and getting away from it all. The most amazing Featherdown site with an exceptionally warm welcome - we can't wait to go back!

With the tents nestled down the slope into the woods this site gives you a real wilderness experience.
Having been a camper all my life the featherdown experience really appealed, don't be fooled it's gorgeous and romantic but you will be lugging wheel barrows up and down big hills to collect fire wood, wishing you'd bought led candles for the toilet, more blankets and a potty for the very child un- friendly toilet! Getting up early to light the stove for your cuppa - but that's part of the charm isn't it?
Now the bad bits of this site, firstly the lady owner (mrs Sykes??) is quite umm, how can I put this politely, matron like!!! You are meant to feel like you can't breath without her permission! Making you feel very very uncomfortable, yes it's her home/business but it's our holiday too (let's face it, it's our hard earned money going in her pockets) Don't expect her to go out your way to make you feel comfortable, help you, advise you or be very good for the farm tour (20 mins driving and 2 mins of pointing at stuff), maybe she'd just had a bad week!
Ok the next bits, cleanliness. All our plates, cutlery etc were filthy even by poor candle light we could see it!! The table, floor etc I don't think had ever had a wipe over. Bed clothes were lovely and clean though.
The showers were new and pretty looking but you have to run in and out of the water as it fades (without touching the dial) between scould yourself hot or freezeing cold - which I suppose helps prevent 3rd degree burns from the hot. There's no way you could shower a child in there. Everything gets soaking so it's one of them awkward camping showers where you have to try and work out where to put stuff and how to put trousers on without getting them wet! They could also have done with a toilet by the showers.

So in summary yes I'd recommend the featherdown experience in a heartbeat but really not this site because matron was just too scary for me!!!!

Dear Littlevikx

I hope you don't mind me contacting you directly. My name is Mark Gordon and I run Feather Down in the UK. Sammy Sykes asked that I contact you on her behalf regarding your review.

She asked that I just clarify the phrase "maybe she'd just had a bad week". She didn't want to talk about it but that week Sammy had learned that a close family member's cancer had returned. So she wasn't feeling great about the world. I am sorry if her mood detracted from your holiday experience with us.

I hope this did not put you off staying with Feather Down again. If you should want to return then please contact me directly on mark@featherdown.co.uk so I can best advise you.

Thanks again for your custom

Being the first visit to a Feather Down Farm I didnt know what to expect, I was hoping it wasnt going to be pretentious 'glamping' but I can honesty say it was perfect. What you see on the website and what is in the brochure is exactly what you get. The tent was set in a pretty woodland area and was warm, cosy, very rustic and charming.

My sons (age 6 and 9) had a fabulous time playing in the woods with the other children, building dens and campfires, paddling in in the nearby river.

Sammy the farm owner was a great host and more than happy to answer questions and let you roam around visiting the hens, piglets and the foals.

We can certainly recommend the experience, especially if you have children around 5-10 years old, they will love it! We will certainly return, possibly when all the bluebellsa re out in the wood in the spring.

Tip: Take plenty of tealights, lanterns, candles and firelighters.

Room Tip: The tents Willow and Holly have the best outlook
