“A Beautiful Farmhouse Close to Mont St. Michel but Away from the Tourist Traps”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

One of the most memorable places I have every stayed. It is in beautiful farmland but not far from Mont St. Michel. What makes the place very special is the owner, Marie-Brigitte Faguais. She speaks no English but was very tolerant of my awful French. The breakfasts are the idea french country breakfast: homemade bread and jams, fromage blanc, great coffee, juice, and cereal. What also makes this place very special is that it is quiet and peaceful in farm country but close to the Mont. Stay here.

From the moment we arrived to when we departed, the service was exceptional. We had a fantastic, huge room, with a stunning view of Mont St Michel. The room was very comfortable with everything needed. The breakfast was fantastic; four different breads fresh from the oven, with a variety of superb home made jams. No heavy cooked meal.
Excellent location. Highly recommended.

We absolutely loved our stay in Ferme Saint Joseph near Mont Saint Michel. We spent two amazing nights with the most incredible views across the farm to the wonder of Mont Saint Michel. We were stunned when we first arrived with the view! There are picnic tables near the chicken coup where you can sit and enjoy cidre de pommes with a baguette and some cheese. We had the room on the second floor and it was very large and spacious. There is a kitchen that guests can use on this level to make tea and coffee. The walk to MSM only takes 25 minutes or so which is perfect on a clear and sunny day (which we had luckily in winter). Otherwise, you can walk the 10 minutes to the free shuttle bus which takes you to the foot of MSM. I recommend walking there early in the morning if the weather is fine and taking the shuttle back. Breakfast is served in a lovely farmhouse family kitchen with the most incredible home made breads and jams. Tea, coffee, juice and fruits are all provided. Marie is lovely and we got by with my basic French fine. She pulled out her Ipad to translate a word for me at one point! This place is such good value and off the tourist track completely. There are a few restaurants in the nearest town of Beauvoir but you will need a car to get to them. We had such an amazing time at MSM and it is because of Ferme Saint Joseph.

We stayed here one night towards the end of September and had booked 2 rooms for 2 couples. We had upstairs rooms that were comfortable, spacious, clean and had amazing views of Mt. Saint Michel. The petit dejeuner (breakfast) was plentiful in terms of the most delicious breads and jams, and there were extra options of juice, cereal and yogurt. The bread, that Marie makes, was so amazing we couldn't stop eating it. We also really appreciated the carafe of coffee vs. having to order separate cups.

We kept asking each other, "really, we get all this for 67 euros per couple?"

You do need to bring your own toiletries, but the towels are comfortable and I was thankful to have a shower rather than a bath with a handheld component.

We also took advantage of the back yard - bocci ball pit, tables to enjoy our cider (she loaned us glasses to drink our own cider and didn't make us buy her products), and fun with her large friendly pup (we were on dog withdrawal by that point from missing our own dogs). We saw but didn't have time to take advantage of the amazing pool (indoors and clean, open just until 6 or 6:30 pm) and the workout/game room.

Marie speaks very little English, so it's helpful to have studied up your French before going.

Tips:
- Come early enough to take advantage of the pool (or stay at least 2 nights)
- Bring mosquito repellent if you're going to spend time outside
- Early morning when the fog is out, walk along the road and past its end toward Mont St. Michel for amazing views, including the sun rise.
- Have a car (or travel with bikes)
- Be prepared to pay in cash
- If you don't like pets, stay away (they will greet you, though they don't go in the rooms)

Room Tip: We had two upstairs rooms and were very happy with them.

Had to search for Marie's website to make a booking , but it was well worth it . We had a little trouble communicating , our French is not great , Marie's English is not great , no probs we got around it. Room was quite sizeable , view out the window of Mont st Michel awesome . Breakfast was homemade breads , cakes etc.
You can walk to the shuttle for Msm , it takes about 10 mins ( saves you 12 euro). Yep I would stay here again.

Although the French countryside in the vicinity of Mt. St. Michel is still quite rural, the area immediately across from the island on the mainland is unfortunately quite touristy and overpriced. You can avoid all this by staying at the Ferme St. Joseph, which is on the other side of the narrow Couesnon River. The views from the property to Mont. St. Michel are unobstructed and gorgeous, and it's an easy 15 minute walk down the road to the dam at the mouth of the river. Cross the dam's bridge on foot, and you're right at the shuttle bus stop to take you to the island (although it's just another 30-min walk if you want to continue along the causeway on foot). In short, the location can't be beat.

The rooms at this B&B are basic but serviceable. Our bathroom didn't have any toiletries (though it did have plenty of towels), so make sure to bring your own. The breakfast is served family style and included a variety of breads, preserves, and cereal. Coffee is on the table in large thermoses.

The main consideration with staying here is that it's good to have a car. Although it's possible to take the Mt. St. Michel shuttle from Pontorson and then walk to the Ferme St. Joseph across the dam, you're limited in your eating choices to the touristy places near the shuttle bus stop or the more expensive (and also touristy) places on Mt. St. Michel itself. For a short visit (and especially if you're traveling light without much luggage) this might not be a problem and is certainly cheaper than renting a car in Rennes.

In all, this is probably one of the best places to say in the area. Don't be turned off by the lack of online booking -- just send the owners an email to the address on the website. It's a great place and is worth the effort.

Room Tip: Our room was spacious, especially considering the tiny hotel rooms in Paris.

Located right across the Mont St Michel, La Ferme St Joseph s a friendly and convenient place to stay while visiting the Mont St Michel and Normandy Region. The room was simply furnished and we could see the Mont St Michel glistening like a jewel into the night from our window. Breakfast was amazing with fresh yogurt, fruits, and plenty of home made breads and jams. The host Marie Brigitte was very friendly and knowledgeable about the region. Some previous reviews were unhappy about the hosts pets, an absolutely friendly dog and a very discreet and comfortable cat. If one does not like animals, then one should probably choose to stay in a hotel rather than a B&B or a farm.
