“A day with the Condors”
Reviewed 10 July 2014

After a morning travelling up the Colca Canyon and having an amazing time seeing the Condors fly with the thermals, it was great to come back to Las Casitas de Colca and luxuriate in the hot tub with amazing views.

This is by far the nicest hotel we have visited during our trip in Peru!

We stayed for two nights but would happily stay there for a week - This is a wonderful place to recharge the batteries.
The colca canyon is beautiful but the scenery of the hotel is amazing. Beautiful grounds and even more beautiful casitas with incredible bathrooms! Nice touches during the turndown service...

We loved the included activities. It was so cute to feed the baby lamas and the cooking and pisco lessons were really good considering it was complimentary. We had a great fun trying to make our own pisco sour!

Food was good, using local products. Best lomo saltado and quinotto of our trip.

We booked our transfers and excursions through the hotel and, while expensive, the service was very good. Thank you Oscar, you're a great driver! The only downside is that the lunchbox could be improved - specially when the trip takes more than a half day.

Other downside is that the pool was cold and not so clean - but it didn't bother us as the weather was already too cold to take a dip.

The hotel was almost empty while we were there and, even if it was very peaceful, it's a shame considering all this wonderful place has to offer.

Don't forget the altitude is already quite high there so take it easy the first day and a two night stay is a minimum to fully enjoy the hotel and the canyon.

This hotel should definitely take the first place in the colca canyon ranking!

Room Tip: We stayed in casita 24 - very nice, private and close enough to the restaurant.

We, as a couple, visited Las Casitas del Colca, last week of April. I had my reservation already since last year, since I was told by end of April was the best time to visit with the best weather and escenary. Indeed, that's how it was. I feel, i need to mention some names from the Staff who really made our stay so great:
Jaime Martinez, without this guy answering me probably hundred emails i sent with so many questions and doubts, we wouldnt have chosen to book there. This is the first line of service that will make to take the decision to go forward or not. Thanks for all the patience on all my thousand questions.
Evelyn Villanueva, I would use the expression: i felt so in love with you madly. You were so kind and ready to serve since the first minutes we stepped into the hotel. You make the front desk a great place to walk by!
Antolio and Edson, great guys always eager to help us on the restaurant matters.
All the rest of the staff who i dont know their names, but were very friendly, like when feeding the baby Llamas, visiting the mini zoo , etc. they were always with a smile.
I gotta say overall, this place is the perfect spot on earth to forget about everything! i thank there wasnt cellular signal when we visited, that makes it even more peaceful than what already is.
We got a Casita Deluxe, i think it was Casita #26 or #28, cant remember, but it had just what i asked for, the terrace and view to El Valle del Colca.
We got the honeymoon package, they really got it all figured it out. They prepared our room with nice white candles around the Jacuzzi and the champagne. The bonfire makes it even better.

My final recommendations to improve would be: Maybe a 10 minutes horse riding through the surround areas of the Hotel could be included in the future.
Also, if you could allow guests to at least cook one fish we catch from fishing would be nice, instead of charging for it.

As for the rest, i already said it all. The place is so amazing that i would probably keep on writing a couple books here. I just need to say to the Hotel managers and all the staff: DO NOT EVER stop giving out this same quality of service you already got, all the small details you do like the feather with our names, etc, makes you different and greatest from all other hotels. Looking forward to come back and also recommend it to all of my friends!!!

A luxurious huge cottage-like house with a perfect view, with a private garden, a pond, great food and a warm welcoming with baby lamas. It was a great experience. The staff was very helpful as we got the altitude sickness.

I won't reiterate what other reviewers have said about the luxuriousness of this property too much other than to say it is indeed luxurious and comfortable in a rustic farm-like setting. The grounds are well kept and pretty including the various vegetable beds where the produce for the restaurant is grown. The actual casitas are charming and very well appointed. The restuarant is amazing in terms of food quality and service. Breakfast delivered to the room was comprehensive and excellently priced at USD$10 (though this may change in high season). The activites provided by the hotel are fun if somewhat basic. The hot tubs are amazing and for me this was the highlight, looking at the night sky with a wine. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout. There isn't really anything negative to say other than the internet is slow but then again it is satellite-based in a remote location so that is not really fair to call a negative. It was a very nice stay and worth the trip out to.

The views of the valley itself would be enough, the outdoor heated Spa, the fireplace, the 3 course dinners - though the altitude limits your ability to indulge - the top level service, their own produce, the baby lamas, the transfers to/from Arequipa all mean a great experience. It is really an amazing and unique place.

You do need to watch the bill as they seemed confused in my case. But reasonable and stuck to the agreed rates. 5 stars otherwise.

I first visited this hotel when Orient Express had recently purchased the property and it was called "El Parador de la Colca". It was a simple hostelry with one model "casita". We were the first guests years ago to stay in the model casita and I have been waiting for 10 years or so to return. Our first trip was truly memorable and the hospitality of the ex-GM, Cesar, was exceptional.

Orient Express sold this property recently. I was a bit hesitant to see if it would still be worthwhile. It's still an exceptional property but not as polished as you would expect an Orient Express hotel to be. I suspect that new management lacks the standards of the famed Orient Express chain.

Room

The casita we were assigned was on the far left side of the property with an amazing view. The casitas aren't villas. They are rather compact rooms with a sofa / seating area in front of the bed. Are they luxurious? No. They are rustically elegant.

The patio area features a small plunge pool. Ours was dirty and not properly heated. Complaints didn't resolve the issues.

The grounds are beautiful. This is truly a special place.

Dining

The food was excellent especially considering the remote location of this hotel. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all delicious. Service was a bit spotty at times and guests who only spoke English did have some noticeable issues.

Spa

The spa is large and beautiful but looks abandoned and a bit ran down. The steam room / shower area needed a good scrub. The light bulb was burned out in the shower area outside of the steam room. Towels smelled mold from disuse. There was only one therapist in the spa and she doubled as the receptionist!

The spa is probably too large for such a small property. Nevertheless it needs some cleaning and maintenance.

What was lacking?? Hummm.......that special feeling that you except from a small boutique property in an isolated location. There was no great host like the ex GM Cesar. Nobody was roaming the property and taking "ownership" of everything. At a small hotel like this I expect individualized attention and a host to chat with.

All staff were friendly but there was just that something special missing....

Overall a great property in an amazing location. Will I return? Twice in a lifetime is probably enough for the hard to reach and isolated Colca Valley. if you have a two week or more trip to Peru I would definitely include it in your itinerary. Three nights here is perfect. No more is needed.

Room Tip: Pick a casita that is isolated. Request a casita with an excellent view.
