“Exellent Hotel near Tokyo University”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

Spacious hotel rooms (for Japan) one block back on a side street from the main entrance to the University of Tokyo, Hongo campus. Everything in excellent and sparkling condition, king size (western) bed, free WiFi, and even had a small refrigerator in room. The hotel provided separate printed instructions in English to operate AC, TV, etc. You need a map to find the hotel but you need a map to find anything in Tokyo. Lots of small restaurants and convenience stores along the main street that boarders the university. Short walk from the hotel (5-10 min) to subway station, longer walk (20 min) through the large Ueno Park to the train station and shopping area in one direction, similar walk to the Tokyo Dome area (baseball and amusement park) in the other direction. An excellent choice for visiting the University area, would definitely stay there again.

This is a modestly priced hotel located very near to the University of Tokyo and about a 15 min walk to three different Metro stations. The room rate usually includes breakfast, which was OK (both Western and Japanese) but it was always the same (even the same background music). The room itself was large (by Japanese standards) but the bed was rather hard. The internet worked well and the housekeeping was good. My only complaint was that there was a bad stain on the carpet near the desk. I complained about this and was told that the stain could not be fixed. This was unacceptable.
The restaurant is supposed to have 'French' cuisine, but I found the food not that good and over priced.

This hotel has a number of advantages. It is not very expensive, and quiet. Its is virtually next door to the main gates of the University of Tokyo. There are a number of small and fantastic little restaurants just at its doorstep. I tried Emma (on the street down to the university) and it was wonderful - arrive early as it has only ten or so seats. Turn right when you get to the university and within ten minutes(after passing numerous convenience stores) you get to a subway line which gets to Tokyo Station in five stops. The hotel itself is quite modest, and the breakfast is especially modest. However it is certainly functional, and a cable in each room works perfectly for internet connections. From Narita, take the Skyliner to Ueno, which is cheaper and faster than the Narita Express, and get a cab to the hotel which takes ten minutes. Expect the cab driver to get lost in the little streets where the hotel is located, however, so be careful to take the exact address written in Japanese with a phone number.

There are 3 train stations that are within walking distances, its means the ease to access other parts of Tokyo. Just 10 minutes walk to the Tokyo University .The room is small but quite comfortable for us, with free internet access as well.you can rent a laptop here.

We stayed at Hongo-forest Hotel from November 19 to November 23 during the IEC meeting. This hotel is very quiet and cdomfortable to stay equiped with vending machine at 2nd floor. And the restaurant also clean, delicious and resonable price.

Espicially I thanks to Mr. SASAKI, works at reception desk, help us to find lost mobile phone which we had dropped at taxi. He did all his effort to to find it with so many phone call to taxi company, because we did not have any information of the name of taxi company due to our mistake that we did not received any receipt form taxi driver.

Anyway we could find and returend lost mobile phone before we returned my country. In this experience, we again reconized this hotel and contury of Japan is always very kind and safe.

Thanks again Mr. SASAKI and Foresthongo Hotel.

I stayed at Forest Hongo with my wife and in-laws in early September of 2013.

Pros
- Short walk to Tokyo University
- Spacious rooms and bathrooms (by US standards)
- Good quality rooms (though a bit dated stylistically)
- Very helpful staff
- Paid ~ $135 per night
- Very quiet

Cons
- 15 min walk to subway line
- Cab rides to major tourist destinations in Tokyo can be expensive

Room Tip: The handicapped-accessible rooms have surprisingly large bathrooms.

This is a well managed hotel, clean and efficient, and if you don't expect a huge room and/or bathroom (seeing it as it's Japan and space is always limited), you'll probably be happy with your choice. Two things that detract from the overall good experience: the WiFi is only available if you ask for a router at the front desk. It takes a minute to set up and works great... if you are lucky to get one, it would seem demand at times is bigger than availability. Second, it's a bit of a walk to major public transportation. On the upside, the location is extremely quiet and you'll sure appreciate it if traveling from afar and fighting that jet lag. Dining options abound around the hotel and the super convenient "Family Mart" is right there around the corner. In summary, I'm not disappointed.
