Although Marunouchi is often thought of as the prime business area of Tokyo, it is also a great area for visitors. The streets are wide compared to the rest of Tokyo. There are stunning modern buildings here, like the Tokyo International Forum building and the recently refurbished post office building (Art Deco). In the midst of it all you have the superb royal palace, which is still lived in by the Japanese emperor. The area also houses some of Tokyo's top hotels and restaurants. My son & I made the palace gates our finish line for our 10,000mile cycle ride in 2009 - see http://longroadhardlessons.blogspot.com - from Ireland to Japan. It was an incredible feeling to arrive in this classy area after such a gruelling ride and the local people made us feel very welcome. I recommend this area of Tokyo very highly. You could easily spend a week in this area as a tourist and not be bored.

Situated between the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Station, Marunouchi gets overlooked a bit but if you love beautiful buildings with elegant shopping and wonderful restaurants, Marunouchi will be worth your time

We stayed at Ginza during our last trip to Japan, which meant we were already surrounded by glitzy, fashionable shops. Marunouchi's shops are in the same class, but the boutiques themselves have a much more posh feel -fewer tourists too (compared to Ginza), which makes it more conducive for shopping.

great shopping destination and super eateries; the concierges in the malls are so helpful and knowledgeable.

A nice area to wander around - in essence a posh office area in Tokyo. It has a Dean & Deluca and other western shops and restaurants and probably doesn't give the bonkers feel of the Ginza district.
