“Grounds were immaculate”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

The scenery was beautiful and the trees very well groomed! It was just so freaking humid. I don't think we stayed longer than 30 minutes before running back to the air conditioned bus.

“A little boring”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014

Since it's closed when we visited it, we could only see its outside walls and fosse. Some part of it is really beautiful indeed. Avoid visiting this place when the sun is intense. It's open only on the Mikado's birthday(currently Dec.23) and on New Year's Day.

“Closed every Friday”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 July 2014

We wish we had known the gardens are closed every Friday. Looks like might be worth return visit tomorrow but who knows......can't accurately comment or rate until we return.

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 July 2014

I found the exterior an anti climax. I knew that the palace only opens on 2 days a year but had hoped that the outside world be more interesting. It is still worth a visit just to say you've seen it.

“Interesting to see but lousy tour”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

We registered in advance for the tour of the Imperial Palace as required. When we got there we were given audio guides and then went on the regular Japanese tour. The guide was supposed to tell us when to press the correct audio number, but either he forgot or we never heard him, so we learned to just press the numbers in order as we went. The Imperial Palace was destroyed in the war, and has been rebuilt in modest fashion, so it's not nearly as impressive as other sights, or as any of the sights in Kyoto, but it's interesting to see what they've built. Just not very impressive or beautiful.
