The only thing more impressive than the size and scope of the Tsukiji Fish Market, is the waiting time for the two most popular sushi joints, Daiwa sushi and Sushi Dai. It was 5AM, 38 degrees Fahrenheit, the day after Christmas and a 5 hour and 2 hour wait for these two most popular establishments! For real! We stood in line for 20 minutes, and as I was going numb, my wife luckily saw two empty spots at the Yamazaki Sushi bar in between the “two hot spots” and it was memorable and fantastic! What great luck to find this spot right in front of our noses. A family affair, with mom pouring out the tea and junior serving up the sushi with papa overseeing everything, a great experience and super fresh sushi, great service and atmosphere, a wonderful staff attitude, and fairly priced. Our advice is skip the other two places, this is where you want to enjoy Tokyo’s best!

We saw the other surrounding sushi shops with terrible long queue and decided on this one as the queue is shorter.

Lady from the shop serve us hot tea while we were waiting outside in the cold morning, which is very appreciated. There is only ten seats or so, which causes the long wait.

Overall very pleased with the politeness and the good service; we were not rushed or hurried even though there are plenty of people waiting. As two of us was sharing the sushi set, the chef even take the effort to divide each piece of sushi into halves for our convenience.

Price was similar to neighboring shops, but the shops at the outer market area has much lower price.

We wanted to have sushi for breakfast, like everyone else who visited the fish market in the morning.

There were long queue outside some of the other restaurants and waiting in line for our food, no matter how fantastic the recommendations, is not our style. In comparison, Yamazaki Sushi had some empty seats. We were apprehensive initially but decided to try it after seeing the TripAdvisor sticker on the restaurant’s door.

I was there with my daughter and we ordered only 1 set. Without our asking, the sushi chef took the initiative to cut every piece of sushi into half (see photo), so that we can try every piece on the set. To top off the excellent service, they served us 2 bowls of complimentary miso soup.

The food is very fresh and tasty. It was pricy; as compared to sushi we had eaten elsewhere in Tokyo but I guess that’s the price you have to pay for seafood so near to the fish market.

No need to line up here early in the morning which is a huge plus. We got there at around 9am though so it was still relatively early. We ordered two of the set menus of sushi but if you were interested in ordering the more fancy sushi individually that is an option too. The fish is not presliced . One of the other customers ordered a prawn sushi - the prawn was still alive and when made into onigiri the tail flicked. ..

Before me and my wife visited Tsukiji Fish Market, from readings reviews and using my travel guide, we decided that we should visit one of the other famous sushi establishments next door. But when I asked one of the tourists at the front of the queue for that restaurant how long she had been waiting, and she replied 3 hours (!!) we decided to try somewhere else as we had other things we wanted to do that day. I am so happy we ate at Yamazaki. Really fantastic experience. Charismatic, friendly chef making sushi in front of us, and tea continually topped up i.e. wonderfully friendly service. Couldn't have wished for more. And only a 30 minute wait. Other tourists who dined with us also seemed to love it. Highly recommended.
