“First visit to Japan”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel during our first visit to Japan. Hotel is in a great location and has a host of amenities. We found this hotel to be at a central location convenient for Tokyo Disney and other popular sightseeing and shopping districts. Rooms are small (for western standards) but there is plenty of storage space under the bed. Would highly recommend!

This budget business hotel is a solid 3-star. I give it a 4-star for the excellent value I got through Hotwire (less than US $70 per night). My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and moved to another hotel in west Tokyo (near Shinjuki) that cost the same price. At times, we regretted not staying at this hotel for all 4 nights.

You need to descend 1 flight of stairs from the street level to access the reception desk. The conveyor belt was non-functioning, but the hotel staff offered to hand-carry our 2 large suitcases down the stairs. They checked us in within 5 minutes at 7:30pm.

Indeed, our room for 2 (room 205) was small, but hard to believe our room size in Shinjuki was even smaller even though Nihonbashi Saibo is located in a much more expensive part of Tokyo. It helps the bed was high enough off the ground to fit 2 large suitcase. It had most of the nice amenities not to be taken for granted in budget hotels: quilted comforter with covers that hotel staff can launder easily; pleasant scented soap, shampoo and conditioner; new-looking room furnishings (including a desk) and plumbing fixtures (including toilet seat with bidet); good sound insulation; clean and large enough elevator. The 2 bathrobes in the room were a nice touch. The room provided both conventional fluff pillows and organic material (buckwheat?) pillows. I really liked the latter pillow, which provided more neck support. Near the elevator in the lobby were instant coffee, tea bags, toiletries and sundry things (e.g., skin exfoliants) that guests may take to their rooms. By the way, do try the toilet seat bidet--it's quite the cheap thrill. :-)

The hotel is located 2 blocks from the Ningyocho stop on the Asakusa line and 4-5 blocks from the Ningyocho stop on the Hibiya line (as much as possible, use the Asakusa line to save time and even money). As a new traveler to Tokyo, you will notice many subway stations with the same name may be located blocks away from each other. This seeming lack of planning and coordination resulted from the merging of the Toei Line and the Tokyo Metro Line to form the current Tokyo subway system. For this reason, the Tokyo Metro-only day pass does not work for the Toei lines. If possible, purchase from your travel agent a 3-day subway combo pass for Y15,000 (not available in Tokyo) if you also decide to purchase an JR rail pass (subway and JR rail trains are separate systems). Our taxi from the Tokyo JR station to the hotel cost about Y8,000. Beware taxi drivers in Tokyo are polite but adroitly avoid lifting heavy luggage into their cars. They pop open trunks and doors but conveniently stay in their driver's seats while you heave ho your suitcases into the car. At the same time, they expect no gratuities (they are demonstrative about this). Because the hotel is located near 2 subway lines and centrally in Tokyo, it's extremely easy to get around to most parts of Tokyo. Hotels that are near JR stations but not subway stations take considerably longer to get around as JR stations have fewer locations in Tokyo and usually require transfers to subway trains.

The hotel is located near many good and relatively inexpensive eating places. The staff can point you to a busier main street a few blocks from the hotel to find restaurants. The neighborhood tends to get quiet in the evenings, as it is located near the financial district. (Shinjuki and Shibuya by contrast have very active night life.) Places that use electronic ordering systems usually have an English option button that you may select (including the subway system).

On check-out day, the hotel concierge stowed our 2 large suitcases from morning until evening without any additional charge. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: We heard no street noise and little hallway noise from our 2nd floor room. Try asking for a room wit...

As said, do not stay here for more than 1 night, hotel staff is quite poor at helping you, and speaks very little English. The neighbourhood is fine and the ningyocho subway is nearby and a good hub from which to discover the city. Internet was ok, bathroom was really on the tiny side and the tub was like a deep washing table;-)

The rooms are small with not an inch to spare. Now that the negative is out of the way, let me get to the positives: Every inch of the room is well planned so, if you take a few minutes to position your bags and things, the room is actually very accommodating. The room is spotless, and housekeeping will change your linens every day unless you tell them not to do so. There is a laundry room with free use of the machines. The service staff is professional and efficient. The price is a great value. Perhaps, best of all, the location is super convenient to the subway and a just pleasant stroll from the Ginza. From Narita, perhaps the easiest way to reach the hotel is to take the orange airport bus to TCAT, and then take a very short taxi or subway ride from TCAT to the hotel. Finally, try the freshly brewed hot coffee from the machines at the nearby 7-Eleven. It is that good.

The hotel is easily accessible from Ningyocho (Metro) station, walking distance 2 mins. With the Metro, all parts of Tokyo are reachable within minutes. The location is good with a convenience store nearby and walking distance to Mitsukoshi, an old flagship store which sells mainly female wear. Good and reasonably priced food like ramen and curry rice are just around the corner.

I had a single non smoking room. It was devoid of smoke smell. The room is expectedly small and the walkway inside the room was the only place I could place (and open) my oversized luggage. I reckon that business travellers with their carry-ons will have lesser problems. The hanger is a recess in the wall - which can fit a couple of business suits comfortably. The bath is clean and everything works perfectly. The room is cleaned daily without fuss, the sheets are clean. Daily nightgowns were provided in packed hygienic condition. Only green tea sachets were provided - coffee would have been nice. There's a hairdryer, fridge, water kettle (for instant noodles), small TV, dimmer-able lights, air-con.

The environment is quiet at night. I particularly liked the "bean?" filled head pillows which worked very well for my neck. Free bath amenities - bath salts, face mask, mouthwash, shaving gel are available at the lobby to pick up. Skewers dinner in the basement restaurant were delicious and worth a try.

Will definitely consider if I am returning to Tokyo alone. Did not try a bigger room but I guess they should be family friendly. Finally, good friendly service at the front counter.

Pretty much everything you might need will wait for you here. Rooms are tiny, not much space for the luggage, but that is japanese standard for this type of hotel.
Amenities are all there, and then some, staff treats you with discretion and respect for a bit of a VIP feeling. Bath tub is a treat.

Location is great, close to couple of train stations, like Ningyocho (3 min) and Mitsukoshi mae (about 10 min), foe easy access to pretty much anywhere in Tokyo. Walking distance to Ginza and Yurakucho area. The location itself is a good place to start experiencing Tokyo, since Ningyocho is famous for traditional style shops and restaurants. You might even spot a geisha on the way to the tea house occasionally. Sumida river is just down the street, with Hamacho park and a nice riverside walk that can take you all the way to Asakusa to the north, or Tsukiji fish market, Hamrikyu garden and Shiodome Shiosite to the south.

Nightlife might be a bit limited on this side of the city, though. There are couple of spots around Ginza, but not much of a clubbing atmosphere. Going out will be either an all nighter or catching the last train. Or a pricey cab ride.
Rates are quite good for this location and the type of the hotel. Better suited for solo travelers, couples or business trips.

Room Tip: Ask for higher floors for the better view.

The Nihonbashi Saibo is located close to Ningyōchō station (Hibiya/Asakusa Lines), and also to Tokyo station. The Saibo is in a lovely neighborhood with many reasonable restaurants and shops within easy walking distance. There is a 7-11 next door. The guest rooms are compact - it is Tokyo after all - but are clean and functional, making efficient use of the limited space, and include a fridge and a TV. My bathroom was also compact, but in perfect working order. The in-room wifi is worthy of special mention. I used my laptop, my tablet, and my smartphone (all inclusive) and connected at blazing speeds at all times. The in-room air-conditioning system is also perfect for the humid Tokyo summer, providing a quiet but comfortable temperature consistently. The service at the Saibo is very good - better than would be reasonably expected from a budget hotel at under $100 per night; the front desk staff were quite exceptional, providing effective business center support several times during my stay. But best of all is the Japanese breakfast, served in the hotel restaurant - excellent quality every day. The Saibo is a good option for business and leisure travelers in central Tokyo.
