“Beautiful - Vintage - Not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

I'll take the Okura experience in Tokyo any day over the impersonal "international" hotels. Okay, so I'm a Western European and get excited by beautiful ikebana arrangements, stunning Japanese food presentation, sterling service, unexpected courtesy - and this place delivers on all points. I'm not sure I've seen a hotel from the 60's so well preserved - in Tokyo, where the architectural history is all about "new" this was a welcome and refreshing quality. Love the spa and pool area - it's not about "posh spa" but about practical, clean, sensible. Swimming pool great for lap swimmers.

We stayed the last night at the Peninsula to have a "tower view experience" of Tokyo and I don't need to have that experience ever again. I'll book Okura next time, too.

Once considered the best hotel in the world, Okura is a Tokyo classic but shows its age. Very traditional and heavy, the old building gives me a sense of visiting my grandma's place. However, the Service is exceptional! The best of the best, as Japanese as it gets. You never stop being bowed to, always with a smile, always professional.

The room lacks nothing really (maybe character?), free wifi is provided, amenities are plenty and of high standard. I personally though would have liked the mattress a little harder.
Location is great, within the embassy district of Tokyo and just a 12 min walk to the famous Tokyo tower and its park, as well as to Roppongi the city's centre of nightlife.

Room Tip: South wing is probably better

Stayed in Okura in February 2013 and had a great time.

Room is spacious and is beautifully decorated. It does not feel old or tired at all although this is a hotel built in 1960s. They did a great job in maintaining the room and (I would assume) continuously upgrading its look and feel.

The lobby is very nice -- grand, spacious but still maintain its traditional Japanese feel.

The breakfast offering is excellent! I had mine at Terrace restaurant and the place is very lovely with the view of Japanese yen garden.

The gym is well equipped and very nice too. Located at South wing, this gym is supposedly not free for the guest. However, just subscribe to the hotel's loyalty program -- Okura Club International (for free) -- and you can access the gym

Service was fast and efficient. The staff were courteous, polite and welcome

Stayed for 5 nights in the hotel's south wing. The room was quite spacious. Wi-fi was complimentary. Very quiet and serene surroundings, but 7-11 is next to the hotel and there is a 24 hours' McDonald's and Starbucks nearby. The hotel charges for use of the gym so ended up running around the quiet embassy area. It is a 30-minutes walk to Imperial Palace from hotel so would regard the location as good. At check-out, was not charged for the additional bottled evian that I had consumed. The hotel staff was very polite and did not accept tips.

Very good polite service, but unnervingly quiet and empty. The rooms are small (Tokyo standard) and I wasn't impressed by the stains on the carpet. Room service was fine. Overall, ok for a couple of nights but wouldn't want to stay any longer.

Service was very good, hotel it self quite nice. However I was very disappointed with the hotel room. It was very outdated and cold. Especially for the price you are paying you would expect something better. But I guess its just the price of a hotel in Tokyo.
Not a big fan of the breakfast either which is not included. Good area though.

Stayed at the Okura for business. It's an excellent hotel with adequate facilities. The classic style rooms are clean and well maintained. Bed very comfortable and I loved the pillows. Wifi is complimentary in-room. There isn't much of a view from the rooms. But the facilities are a bit old. The chairs in the lobby seemed to be old style 60's design. And it would not surprise me if they had been there since then. Lots of staff who seemed anxious to help. They must all have bad backs with so much bowing to customers.

And the prices are definitely high. Breakfast was 3500 Yen.....

I had meetings in the business district so the location as convenient. English TV channels limited to CNN, BBC and CNBC.

Room Tip: Remember that smoking is allowed in hotels in Japan. So be specific about your needs.
