I'll take the Okura experience in Tokyo any day over the impersonal "international" hotels. Okay, so I'm a Western European and get excited by beautiful ikebana arrangements, stunning Japanese food presentation, sterling service, unexpected courtesy - and this place delivers on all points. I'm not sure I've seen a hotel from the 60's so well preserved - in Tokyo, where the architectural history is all about "new" this was a welcome and refreshing quality. Love the spa and pool area - it's not about "posh spa" but about practical, clean, sensible. Swimming pool great for lap swimmers.
We stayed the last night at the Peninsula to have a "tower view experience" of Tokyo and I don't need to have that experience ever again. I'll book Okura next time, too.
