“I want to find something negative but I just can't…enjoy”

I went to this restaurant knowing it would be highly sophisticated and probably not really Italian based on the menu selection. I was right. This is not the restaurant you go to for authentic Italian but the restaurant you go to for authentic! Every dish was visually appealing and a dance on your tastebuds. Being from California we were at a loss on which wine to select so we selected a 2009 French red that was outstanding. Upon entry you are given a variety of breads with homemade butter. The only thing that would have made them better was if they were served warm. This restaurant is one to try once for a special occasion. It's an event not a place you go to weekly for your Italian fix. It's VERY expensive (least expensive price fixe menu is $78 USD) and everything else adds up pretty quickly. But really you can't find this type of restaurant just anywhere.

“Superb food, excellent service”
Reviewed 18 September 2012

I visited for lunch with a friend. Aso, with 2 Michelin stars, is perhaps tokyo's finest Italian restaurant. Tatsuji Aso brings touches of Japanese artistic flair to some excellent Italian dishes. Walking through the brasserie/cafe at the front, which was very popular on a Tuesday lunchtime, the restaurant is located at the rear.

We were presented with some three menu options for lunch and opted for the 11,500¥ menu. The food is excellent, although I would have preferred a little more time between courses, but this is the way in Tokyo. Particular to note was the foie gras served in a light crepe and a sweetcorn dressing. The aged Japanese beef was also excellent, as was dessert. I chose ice creams served on a block of ice with different salts on the size that you grind yourself.

Service is excellent. Efficient and friendly. I found the atmosphere a little wanting although this is not the place you come to for entertainment, it's about the food.

A definite recommend but book in advance.

“This place is absolutely delicious!!”
Reviewed 12 August 2012

This restaurant has great food and the presentation is absolutely fabulous!! The prix fixe menu for lunch is more than reasonable which I highly suggest.
It's unfortunate they don't accept reservations during the weekend, because they are booked with weddings, but if you have the chance on a weekday, GO!!
Service is impeccable and food is really really good!!
They put a twist on Italian without destroying the taste and keep it interesting!!

“Good 2 star restaurant”
Reviewed 30 July 2011

I heard quite bit about this restaurant on foodie forums and decided to give it a try. It's a 2 star michelin restaurant with prices to match, so we went for a 3 course meal from their lunch menu ( around 5000 yen much better value than dinner).

The service was excellent and the food was very well presented - absolutely gorgeous italian dishes. I had an anchovie pasta dish, which was presented in a heat proof glass - very innovative. I had pork three ways for my main (yum), and caramel gelato which was served on a slab of ice. The meal came with bread that is baked on site and also petit fours and coffee.

The restaurant is set in a house type setting with a lovely garden. After lunch we strolled back to Shinjuku station to walk off our meal.

Well worth the money if you like fine meals but not the price that often comes with it.
