“Wouldn't even let us in!”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

just a bit of a background on what we actually did before arriving here:
that day we had done a lot of traveling, had been in Kyoto, and the plan was to head up to Tokyo, and stay there for the night, after going to Hiroshima, and Nara.

so we caught the Shinkansen from Kyoto station quite late, we arrived in Tokyo Central about 11:00pm-12:00am, and after being unable to find anywhere we decided we would head to this capsule in Shibuya, so we arrive in Shibuya, manage to find this capsule hotel, which was such a sigh of relief, as we had been traveling around all day, and as you could imagine were extremely tired, and sore, after lugging around heavy rucksacks.

so we walk in, they have room, thats awesome we thought, gave them our passports etc, then they saw my mates tattoo, and refused to let us in, as he had a tattoo, we were literally devastated, as this was our last resort, we had tried tons of places before, and after we got refused access here, it was the final blow, we were even trying love hotels and anything just to get a room, bare in mind we were two straight blokes.

at this time we were stuck in Shibuya, train station had closed for the night, so that night we ended up sleeping on the steps of the subway, with a bunch of homeless people. well i say slept was more like a 30 Minuit nap, as the station opened up again at like 3am or so. after that we heading to Shinjuku where we managed to find a manga cafe and slept there for a few hours.

If you have never stayed in a capsule hotel before, then you're in for quite an experience. Capsule Land Shibuya was never known for their hospitality, and none of their staff will speak to you in English. BUT, there is still good value for yen here. Pay the extra 500yen to stay on the top floor. There are fewer capsules there...less people, better sleep, easier use of washroom... It is well worth it. There is a nice view from the top as well. The onsen (hot bath) is the only way to clean up, so if you're shy, either get over it or find a standard hotel.

The biggest hassle is there is no room for luggage. Pack light. They will not check your luggage behind the desk either, rather, offer you use of coin lockers outside of the hotel. Again, it's a hassle, as these lockers are OUTSIDE the building, meaning you're competing with everyone else in Tokyo to store your bags.

Spending a night or two here wont' kill you. It's something I will recommend for anyone who needs to be near Shibuya Station, or if you only have a one night layover. Don't plan your vacation around it. Use it as it was designed for, a clean place to rest, and be ready for your tomorrow.
