Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku

Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 June 2014

This is our first visit to Tokyo and we are so glad we chose the Sunroute Plaza. The hotels’ location is fantastic being very conveniently located in Shinjuku to the main attractions, shopping and sights with numerous eateries and “Food Markets or Seven Elevens” in very close proximity. These were very handy to buy fresh fruit, a decent take away ramen or even a beer! For a snack, breakfast, lunch or dinner you need only take a short 1-minute walk where you will find the usual McDonalds, First Kitchen through to various local eateries. We did enjoy breakfast downstairs one raining morning and for approx. 1500 yen each, found the presentation, variety and taste quite good. It was a mixture of western and Asian influences and good enough to go to again if another rainy morning should strike. We also went to one happy hour session (between 5-7pm) at the bar where for 550 yen/drink, there was a wide range of beer, spirits and cocktails available. It looked comfortable but unfortunately smoking was allowed in the lounge area. We opted to stay at the bar for an hour or so away from the smoke – still a very pleasant experience enjoying our drinks before heading out for more sight seeing.

I booked 2 rooms – a standard twin and a double, each located on the top 14th floor. The double although quite small had a double bed and it was perfect for our son. Both rooms were immaculately presented and spotlessly cleaned daily with fresh pyjamas laid out on the bed each day. One less thing to wash! The twin was roomy enough for my wife and I and the associated suitcases and shopping. As reported the beds are ultra hard, but nonetheless it was some of the best sleep that we had. The rooms had a nice ambience and felt modern, the air-conditioning worked well. There were no noise issues from house keeping or lifts. The supplies for the bathroom including body wash, sponges, etc. were better than any than we had experienced in any 5 star in Australia or hotels in Hong Kong or Singapore. For those used to awful grainy pictures on hotels TVs, you will be very happy with the quality image on the in room TVs. For western tastes, if you drink hotel tea/ coffee – there is none provided, green tea only which is not a big issue. Also no in room safe.

The weather was variable during our 8-day stay, with about half the time being showery. So it was with much delight to find this hotel very conveniently located right next to a subway entrance for 2 of the lines running around Tokyo. It meant keeping dry if needing to catch the train. Not that Shinjuku station was far away being only about a 5-10 minute stroll depending on pedestrian traffic and whether you had baggage to wheel. The airport limousine bus from Narita Airport dropped us at the hotel – convenient when raining! On checkout we walked our suitcases from the hotel to Shinjuku train station on a hot humid morning to catch the train to Shinagawa station. Not an issue as a lot of others are doing the same.

I was surprised to find complimentary umbrellas provided at reception for those days when they were needed. The Wi-Fi was complimentary and there are 3 washing machines (300 yen/ wash) and separate dryers (100yen for 30 mins) in the basement. The staff were friendly, had a understanding of English and the service was excellent. The small tings and this convenience all added up to a great experience at this hotel and made our stay in Tokyo a greater experience.

Thank you Sunroute. We miss it already and will be returning here again.

Room Tip: For couples, if you need more room - go for a twin bed. BYO tea and coffee

Overall, it is not a bad experience staying at Sunroute.
The good:
Very convenient location - a few minutes walk to Shinjuku station
Staff are fluent in English
Service is good - asked for forks etc and they sent them in the room within minutes

The bad:
The room is tiny - I know I know it's in Tokyo, but if you are travelling with someone else and both of you have luggages, it can be struggle to fit everything in that tiny room, I would suggest spend a bit more money on a bigger room
The bathroom is a bit outdated and old
The carpet in the room is not very clean, you can see big stains on it

Located within a few minutes walk from Shinjuku Station and just beside exit of Toei Odeo line.
Walking distance to many major shopping Mall, Takashimaya, IOIO, Yodobashi camera etc and nightlife streets full of affordable Japanese eateries. Airport limousine takes you from Narita or Haneda Airport, right to the hotel door steps. Free wifi both in room and lobby area. Most of them can converse in English and are very friendly. Hotel Breakfast may need to improve slightly as it serve the same daily food everyday. But no problem for the many eateries everywhere in Japan.

It's located wonderfully near the shinjuku station, very easy to find! it's also just a short walking distance to the shinjuku nightlife streets.

We also walked to tokyo metropolitan government building from here!

The prices for this hotel is quite reasonable, there is no safe in the hotel room so you can deposit your valuables at the reception counter. The people at the reception counter were friendly and ever helpful.

My family and I stayed at the Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku in June. I have to say, the reviews are all correct. This is a really good hotel for the price and location. The best thing about this hotel is that they get back to you on email with all of your questions answered and that the airport limousine takes you from Narita Airport, right to the hotel. Traveling with a 1 year old and a total of 4 adults, the airport limousine made it so easy for us to get from the airport to the hotel with all of our stuff. The staff speaks English really well and was able to answer all of my questions. I asked for a bed rail for our 21 month old on one of the twin beds and that same bed pushed towards the wall. The bed was ready, just the way we asked. We also asked to be as close as we could to my parent's room, which they also accomodated. Wifi was great, the water heat and pressure of the shower was perfect, they have an ice machine available on the floor that we were on and they have coin operated washing machines and dryers in the basement which is a must for any parent. We also asked for 2 more pillows for our little one and they were more than helpful with my request. I was also able to have my luggage sent to Kyoto 1 day in advanced to my checkout, right in the hotel, which is amazing for such a reasonable price. This was a must since I couldn't see myself lugging all of that stuff on the Shinkansen with a baby in tow. The hotel also allowed us to leave some luggage at the hotel while we were in Kyoto since we were ending our trip at the Sunroute again for no charge. Amazing. They also loaned us umbrella's since it was monsoon season and boy did it come in handy! We also booked our return back to Narita at the hotel on the aiport limousine, making it so easy for us. The walk from the hotel to the JR station was a couple of blocks away, but nothing crazy far. The best exits for us was the South or East exits. Also, we liked that our hotel wasn't at the station since it was a little calmer and quieter. There is also a Famly Mart across the street so we could buy coffee, milk and yogurt and breakfast every morning and evening. We also ate at the restaurant in the lobby. It was actually very reasonable and it was a nice departure from Japanese food. Don't get me wrong, I love Japanese food, in fact my ethnicity is Japanese, but I needed some variety and they were able to provide that. Made it so easy for my little one as well since we could have him run around a little bit in the lobby waiting area for our food to arrive. So overall, I would definitely stay at this hotel again. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.

Room Tip: If you have a little one, choose the twin room instead of the double. They have a little more space...

This hotel is conveniently located, especially if one is taking the NEX train. Walking along Shinjuku Terrace city and across the bridge will lead one to the hotel. Nearest shopping centre is Takashimaya and Tokyu Hands, Uniqlo. Odakyu and Keio malls are also nearbly. We also walked to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building to view Tokyo from 45th floor. The are many restaurants at Takashimaya. Travelling to Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Harajuku can be done easily by taking the JR Yamanote Line. The triple room beds are very comfortable and the toilet is of a good size. We signed up for free membership and enjoyed late checkout at 1 pm.
The breakfast spread is good. However, it will be good if they could offer a variety of food on different day as most people stayed at least two days there. They could vary the type of bread served, for example.
