Stayed at the Mets Shibuya for three days in October of 2009, travelled with a group of 6 people.

We were ALL very happy with the hotel. It's clean, the rooms are of decent size (please remember this is Tokyo), the location is amazing, breakfast is included in the price and the internet is free. We couldn't ask for more.

The staff was very helpful and friendly.

The area around the hotel is packed with restaurants, cafés, stores.

This was our first trip to Tokyo, and we all fell in love with the city, and are definitely going back. I will no doubt choose the Mets Shibuya again, if given the choice.

The Hotel Mets Shibuya is a JR Group hotel on the edge of the bustling Shibuya district. It has very easy accessibility for many travelers, but has some quirks and is not really the best in its hotel class, even in the Shibuya area. Still, it's a fairly nice hotel that does offer a few perks that nearby competitors might not, and shouldn't be overlooked if trendy (and pricey) Shibuya is your destination of choice. Read on for more...

LOCATION:
The Hotel Mets Shibuya is attached to the New South Exit of the JR portion of Shibuya Station. If you're arriving on a JR line (including the Narita Express), following the signs for the New South Exit will drop you right at the front door of the hotel, once you've cleared the turnstiles. For those coming in from Shinjuku, or up from Yokohama and points south, the JR Shonan-Shinjuku line is your best bet -- that platform is footsteps away from the New South Exit. For other arrivals, note that Shibuya station is HUGE... you'll have quite the walk from many JR lines, including the popular Yamanote Loop. For travelers arriving on other lines (Tokyu, Tokyo Metro, etc...) you cannot reach the New South Exit, as you would have to card-in to the JR portion of the station. Instead, exit the station by the East exits, and head south-east, either taking the underground walkway during daylight hours and following along the tracks heading out of the station, or taking the overhead walkways at any time, going about 2 blocks south, and turning right. Travelers arriving by car will be pleased to know that the hotel has its own parking lot on the ground floor, which is sometimes a rare luxury in busy Tokyo.

PROPERTY:
The hotel is a high-rise style, with street level on the 1st floor, a medical clinic on 2, the train station (JR New South Exit) on floor 3, reception on 4, and guest rooms on 5 and above. The hotel has a Chinese restaurant on the 3rd floor, inside of its building, and there is a coffee shop (The Coffee Laboratory) out near the JR station entrance, also on the 3rd floor. Most/all room rates come with breakfast included -- however, breakfast comes in the form of coupons good at either of the two restaurants. We found that it was impossible to just go and get a latte or other small breakfast nibble using the coupons, though. The Chinese restaurant offers a full breakfast buffet, and the coffee shop offers a small selection of dine-in set breakfasts, and that's all that the coupons will get you. If you just want a muffin and a coffee to go, it's cash-and-carry only. Weird, but that seems to be the policy.

NOTE: This property is one of the JR Group hotels. Overseas travelers who have a JR Rail Pass will receive a 10% discount off of their room rate by showing their pass upon check-in. Note that not all room rates qualify for this discount -- some package rates or group rates specifically exclude it. Also, note that your rail pass does not have to be active yet. So long as it's not expired, your pass' first use date can be some time in the future, and you will still receive the discount.

ROOMS:
The rooms are fairly standard Japanese business hotel rooms. That is to say, tiny, with quite firm beds, thin pillows, a desk with 1 chair, the typical high-tech Japanese toilet, and a shower/bath combo. We spent 4 nights in our room, and while it was certainly cramped, like many travelers, we didn't spend much time there outside of sleeping hours, so it wasn't a terrible inconvenience. There is complimentary wired Internet in the room, and the usual assortment of amenities (including a hair dryer) are provided.

AMENITIES:
Other than breakfast and wired Internet, there aren't many. A single computer and printer (pay per use) are located on the reception level and available to guests. Newspapers (local and Western) are refreshed daily for reading in the reception-level lounge area only.

STAFF:
The staff were reasonably helpful, and most spoke reasonably "guest-services fluent" English. No surprise, some competence in Japanese will be more helpful if you have to interact with the staff for more than basic check-in/out activities. While they were generally effective at their jobs, they didn't proactively offer a lot in the way of helpful guest service -- the hotel itself is rather woefully lacking in area information, including maps or other visitor information. They have a basic assortment of not-too-detailed materials, but don't expect high-quality itinerary planning from the staff. "Effective, but distant" might describe the service.

Overall, our stay in Shibuya was adequately served by the Hotel Mets Shibuya. With the rail pass discount (for foreign travelers), the rates were very competitive. If you're the sort to eat a full meal each day, the complimentary breakfast offerings were pretty good. If you have a decent sense of navigation, the hotel is actually pretty well placed -- out of the major bustle of Shibuya, but still within an easy few minutes walk of it. For the price, we'd probably return. But otherwise, the Hotel Mets is about as middle-of-the-road as they come, for Japanese business hotels.

We'd recommend it for those in Shibuya on budget business travel, tourists with a JR pass who plan to use JR lines out of Shibuya Station, or those looking for a reasonably-priced hotel that they don't plan to spend much time in, in the Shibuya/Harajuku/Shinjuku districts.

Amazing value for the price. I booked the hotel for a group of 14 28-30yr olds. We paid 8000 yen per person, per night. Originally, i was apprehensive as the reviews on other sites had this at a 2 star hotel but once we got there, we quickly realized this was a great find. I'd say it's about a 3-3.5 star hotel. Rooms were big (compared with Tokyo standards). VERY comfortable beds, very clean and the location is unbelievable. It's about a 5 min walk from the Shibuya crossing.

My parents stayed at a 5 star hotel (cerulean tokyo tower) but when they saw our room, they wished they stayed there (half the price at hotel mets).

full bathrooms, flat screen TV and breakfast was included (although no one in our group made it for breakfast as we were out till 5 am every night).

hope this helps!

Big room at 17,100 Y with Japan Rail Pass Discount. Very clean with japanese style bathroom. In the Shibuya Station (follow the New South Exit), walk distance to Omotesando and Shinjuku. A few subway stops from Rappongi and Ginza. Great location! Breakfast is included. Internet access in the lobby (fee).

Fantastic location, in the heart of Shibuya. If you want to get a coffee and watch people at Tokyo's most famous crossroad.
Staff is helpfull, speaks english.
Rate is standard for Tokyo, 20% off with a JR pass.
A bit difficult to find, follow the signs in the JR station "new south exit". Breakfast is included.
Good deal if you want a super clean, brand new room.
Rooms on the 14th floor have a nice view.
