“Tight quarter”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2013

Very close to the action in Shinjuku. Great for heading out, not so great when you are awakened at 2:00 a.m. by the trash men. This is a compact hotel, with tight rooms. Our twin double could hardly fit our luggage, and the bathroom was tiny. Lots of smoking rooms in Japan and we landed in one.
Complimentary coffee and juice in the morning, with toast or a roll. A good price, friendly front desk, but just too tight for tall travelers.

Room Tip: Room on the street side can be noisy.

I stayed there last February for my first time in Tokyo. I had a lot of trouble finding the hotel from the train station and even Japanese people had a hard time helping me, but at last a taxi driver was able to drive me there. The front desk guy who was there when I arrived was very nice and polite, and when I went back an hour later to get the USB cable for the wired Internet the lady there was as nice and polite. I really appreciated the water/coffee/tea machine on my floor, as I did with my room: yes it was small, but totally convenient for a single person. The bed was comfortable so I slept really well while I was there, so well that I didn't get to taste the breakfeast offered by the hotel. The location was great, but I had a hard time finding myself around Tokyo, so I really appreciated that when I left the lady at the front desk gave a map to help me get at the train station.

Stayed here for 3 nights in a standard double room. Excellent location in busy Shinjuku area with lots of shopping, bars and restaurants to choose from. Wrecked from overnight travelling we got a taxi from the train station (cost around 1000 yen) but on the day we were leaving walked back to the station in about 15mins. Metro station is right around the corner which is handy for exploring different areas of Tokyo. We had a room facing the street and found it very quiet and clean. Ok it was small, but fits two people with backbags/small suitcases no problem. Negatives: window didn't open and also the bed was quite hard and pillows not comfortable but all the above seems to be quite common in japanese hotels in my experience. Wifi available in the lobby was fast and you can rent a router with small deposit to use in your room (connection not as fast tough). Staff was polite with enough english to get by and free breakfast of coffee, juice and croissants/breads was definitely a plus.

I had 2 nights there before, it's located a bit far away from Shinjuku JR Station (15-20mins walk) and the hotel is not easy to find (I asked local police but almost no one knows about it).
Metal room door is kind of annoying when someone is closing it nearby (noisy), the room is very small but I should expect this (most hotels in Shinjuku are small rooms that's why I picked Ikebukuro later on).
Toilet + bath area is extremely small, for people with huge body would feel a bit uncomfortable.

I had 2 nights in the Lonestar. It was very convenient to the subway, the shopping, and the nightlife of ni-chome. The room was tiny, but acceptable, and very clean. Free wi-fi in the lobby (and in your room, if they had a special wi-fi box available to lend -- all of them were lent out on my first night, but I had one the 2nd night), and a simple breakfast to at least get your day started.

Communication with the staff was relatively limited, as most of them didn't seem to speak much English, and I didn't speak much Japanese -- but they were very nice and helpful.

I walked with my luggage from the train station at Shinjuku, thinking it wouldn't be a very far walk, (which it's really not), but I would definitely take a taxi next time instead of wheeling my roller suitcases around the city streets.

Small hotel with small rooms as expected, like all Japan hotel. Rooms are very very clean. Located near subway station which in actually a little far walk to the real trains (depends on what line you will be using) but at least you walk in a covered passage way. Very convenient and warm in cold and rainy fall season like when i stay.

It's a located in a quiet area but could be a little noisy on weekends since behind the hotel shinjuku ni-chrome are famous for bars and night clubs. A bit 10-15 minutes walk to shinjuku shopping area.

All in all, a great base for you to explore tokyo. Quite recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for room facing front streets as it's quieter.

What I got:
A small, clean single room. The bathroom is about as big as a closet. I asked for non-smoking but the room smelled of cigarette smoke, something a different reviewer noticed. In the room is a very mini fridge with two glasses for water, which can be had for free on the 4th floor. There's also some sort of little machine (a dehumidifier? an air purifier? I have no idea).

You have to ask the front desk for a LAN cable if you want internet. If you want WiFi, you'll have to put down a small, refundable deposit and they'll give you a router to put in your room.

The hotel provides small items such as soap at the front desk. In your room they provide shampoo, conditioner, body soap, towels, toothbrushes+toothpaste, nightgowns, slippers and a small hairdryer.

Breakfast each morning consists of pieces of toast, bread or croissants with either jam or margarine to spread on them. There is also juice and coffee from an electronic dispenser thing.

The location is terrific. Shinjuku is a busy neighborhood, and there are little izakayas with people drinking beer and having bbq till the small hours. Shinjuku Avenue and great department stores are also nearby. Finally, there are several metro stations within walking distance. The closest seems to be Shinjuku-Gyonmae, which might be about 3 blocks away. That can take you to Shibuya, Roppongi, and to transfers elsewhere. The hotel is also around the corner from a bunch of gaybars. Mostly for guys, but one women friendly bar.

Overall, this is a great place if you're on a budget and need a clean, convenient place to lay your head.
