“A great base in Tokyo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2012

Booked this hotel a few months before the trip after reading its TA review and did not regret it. An easy 15 minute walk from the Shinjuku JR station the hotel is positioned at the quiet end of the main Shinjuku shopping and nightlife street. Excellent reception staff, pleasant and efficient with an early check in allowed. Room was large by Japanese standards with kitchen area, lounge and nice size double bed. View was into other Tokyo buildings and roofs but this is a city where every bit of space is used to the full. Bathroom was a typical Japanese single unit with bath and shower above plus magical electronic toilet that heats the seat, provides a bidet operation and other interesting functions, needless to say everything worked and was well maintained. Cleanliness was to a high standard, the bed linen flawless and carpet clean. Large flat screen TV in the lounge area along with small table and sofa. In Japan you hand in your passport for photocopying and they must have noticed my wires date of both since on her birthday the following day she received some cakes and a message with congratulations and comments from the staff, what a lovely touch. Main bright light Shinjuku area was 15 minutes walk away along the main street and it was a great experience to explore this before returning to our quiet area for a great nights sleep. Did not eat in the hotel but the 7/11 on the corner and little Japanese take away across the road provided good quality and reasonably priced meals for our needs. We stayed here 3 nights and would return without hesitation.

Stayed here at the end of April 2012

The room was a decent size for two people, I really cant complain about that. Good size bathroom as well. The room was very clean, maid service was great. Also I did not find the hotel to be noisy either, so thats always nice. Service downstairs was just fine, they all spoke English well enough which was helpful.

Location was, OK. Its close enough to the shinjuku gyoen metro stop so no complaints there, its a short-ish walk to the madness that is shinjuku and if you've been drinking, the walk does help a bit.

If your budget for a hotel is in the $100-$160 range I think its a good deal.

My husband and I stayed here in March and it was great. Spacious room, clean, safe and near the train station. There was a 7-11 nearby and lots of cafes and restaurants around. Very convenient to get food. We also found quite possibly the best ramen on earth near the hotel!

The staff was friendly and helped with our trip to the fish market. It was a very pleasant stay and we will definitely be back again.

We have just left Citadines Shinjuku to head on to Kyoto. I was very impressed with this hotel, the previous reviews were entirely justified. The 'apartment' was really more of a large hotel room with sitting area and screened-off bed, plus a little kitchenette area with toaster, kettle and hot plate, but having arrived in Kyoto I see why people say that Japanese hotel rooms are small! This makes Citadines even better value, considering you get so much space and storage. The room and bathroom were spotless, I don't think I have ever been in such a clean hotel room. The shower was powerful and the wifi was lightning fast (individual routers in each room). We were on the 8th floor and noise from the street was very quiet through the windows, although on the last couple of nights it was very windy which seemed to make its way down into one of the air vents and was a bit noisy. Breakfast at 700 yen was pricey for what it was and contained little choice for westerners (I love eating local food but can't quite stomach it in the mornings). I would recommend buying some bread and jam etc at the 7-11 which is just downstairs (and also has an ATM). The staff were very helpful, one wrote down in Japanese that we wanted to buy tickets for the Ghibli museum, so that we could show it to the cashier at the Lawson convenience store as this is the only way to get these tickets.

NOW, the downside of such a great hotel at a reasonable price is the location - it is a good 20 minute walk to Shinjuku station, which if you do a few times a day starts to become a bit irritating. Taxis aren't cheap so you wouldn't want to just hop in one each time, so you could either change at Shinjuku for a metro stop that's closer to the hotel (though the JR pass doesn't cover the metro) or investigate the buses (also not covered by pass). Note that many maps of Shinjuku don't quite cover the hotel, but just walk east along Yasukuni-dori and you will see the purple Citadines sign after a while.

The good thing is that Shinjuku has more than enough bars and restaurants to keep you occupied during your stay, all within a 15 min walk of the hotel, so if you didn't fancy the walk to the station each evening, you could eat locally with no problem. If you want to venture further afield, Shinjuku station is very well connected (seems to be the 2nd biggest station apart from Tokyo station itself) and reasonably easy to navigate around.

If I could pick up this hotel and move it about 1km closer to the station, it would get 6 stars!

We stayed here for 5 nights in April. We really liked how large the rooms were, as others have commented, and how there was also a kitchenette. The room itself was very clean and well laid out. The staff was friendly, helpful, and could speak perfect English. Our room was facing the main road so it was a bit noisy with the traffic but it wasn't too bad. It is around a 5 min walk to the nearest subway station, but for those with a JR pass who want to take the train instead, it's about a 15 min walk to Shinjuku station. I had a JR pass so I chose to walk to the station to take the train and save some money rather than taking the subway.

You can definitely prepare your own food in the kitchenette, but I preferred to buy bento boxes for dinner from the nearby places. There is a cheap bento place across the street where you can buy dinner and eat at home. Note that the department stores such as Iwaten also begin to discount their food products about an hour before closing time, so this is another option for dinner.

Very good service, convenient location, well appointed rooms, very clean, very safe. Price is reasonable. Five minute's walk to shinjuku gyoemmae railway station, which is connected to main tokyo station and from where other areas are easily accessible. Excellent choice for families. Half minute walk to 7Eleven, from where one can buy breakfast stuff-precooked pizza is good. Also, the small lane from hotel to shinjuku gyoemmae Station has small japanese restaurants where food is cheap and very delicios- especially the one oppposite to family mart in the lane.

Stayed here for nine nights and can give the hotel my recommendation. It's not fabulous, but it's a great value in an expensive city.

The standard rooms are quite new, very thoughtfully laid-out and furnished. The kitchenette was very handy for breakfasts in particular - a big plus because the hotel's breakfast (which costs extra) was a disappointment. The rooms are a bit small, though comparatively larger than other Tokyo hotels at a similar price, but it was no problem for the two of us. My only complaint was that the bed was firmer than I like and took some getting used to.

The location isn't what I'd choose on my next visit to Tokyo. It's a 5-minute walk to the nearest subway station, but it's a minor station and to get most places requires a transfer. It's not that big a deal but it adds on 10 or 15 minutes each way. It's a bit farther walk to Shinjuku Sanchome, which serves three lines (it's a spread out station - after entering it's another 5 minutes to the furthest line), or it's a full 15 minutes walk to the main Shinjuku station. Not a killer, but it always felt like we were losing time to the out-of-the-way location.

Also note the 2pm check-in time. They were not able to accommodate us any earlier and there is not a proper bag room, so we had to leave our bags unattended in the lobby for several hours (as were many others). Thankfully Tokyo is a very low-crime city! Otherwise the staff was excellent and very helpful over the course of our stay. Free wifi - and a straightforward system that didn't require endless login procedures - was a great plus, too.
