“simply the best meal i have ever had so far”
Reviewed 14 August 2014

this is our first 3 Michelin Star restaurant experience, simple this is the best. after the online research, i made a booking 2 months before our Japan trip and lucky enough to have a table for us on the date we prefer. be honest, every single meal looks simple but has lots of layer of flavour. definitely beyond our expectation. if you are the sake lover, then you have to try their collection. i am still regretting now why i did not buy extra bottle and take home with us. the serve is top class, only down side is the waitress who is serving us at the beginning of the dinner, due to her limited english, make it very difficult to communicate with her, but i don't think it is her fault. management should pick the right staff for the english-speaking customer in the first place, that is maybe the reason why manager came to our room and staying with us for the rest of the dinner. she was wonderful, i mean that. great knowledge, great service and accommodate our special request which come to the counter seat and have a change watching chef Ishikawa show his arts. considering the food and service we reserved, i even feel we been under charged. this sounds silly, but it is my true feeling while i am in the taxi on the way back to hotel. we will be back be sure. job well done Team Ishikawa, big thanks for this wonderful dinner, can't wait to visit you guys again

“Outstanding tasting menu with the best service”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

Our high expectations were exceeded at this small 3 star Michelin restaurant in Shinjuku. The restaurant was booked beforehand by our hotel and with the simplest instructions from the concierge, we had no difficulty in finding the restaurant. We chose the larger of the two set menus with some 10 or more courses. Starting with hard clam, monkfish liver and rape flower bud followed by deep fried conger eel on mashed garden pees. The bamboo shoot soup with wakame seaweed was fantastic as was the spear squid with roe and the duck hot pot. The specialty dish that evening was steam rice with sea urchin and clam, simply outstanding. Wonderful presentation by the engaging hostess and waitresses who were all well versed in English and spoke confidently about the dishes. We chose an Argentinian Malbec to accompany the meal. We were delighted to have the owner and master chef Hideki Ishikawa come through discuss the menu. When it was all over and we left the restaurant he and our waitress walked us to the door and watched us leave, waving until we were out of sight, hospitality of a level that we had never experienced before. Until we were surprised on our return to South Africa to receieve post card from the Hideki-san thanking us for eating in his restaurant. Wow.

“Amazing food”
Reviewed 8 April 2014

My husband had heard about this restaurant and insisted on making a reservation a few weeks before our trip to Tokyo. I reluctantly agreed as I know that I would have to workout even harder to burn those extra pounds…

Anyway, on the night we arrived outside the restaurant, we did not realise that it was even a restaurant! From the outside, it looked just like someone's house! It is located at the back of the Bishamon Temple by the way.

We were ushered by a very pretty and smiley lady into a small room. We realised then that that was our own little private dining room - how exciting! Our appetizer started off with the hard clam, monkfish liver covered with egg yolk sauce and Japanese mustard. It was beautifully done indeed. The second dish was the deep-fried dish - conger eel and mashed garden peas with butterbur bud petals. I could not remember when I had such a wonderfully fried fish before…very memorable indeed. The soup dish came next which was freshly harvested bamboo shoot dumpling with wakame seaweed. The sashimi dish was sea bream garnished with fresh seaweed and Japanese herbs along with the snow crab topped with crab innards with broth jelly. Next came the grilled dish which was the kinki fish with freshly harvested onion. The specialty came next which was the spear squid with roe which was garnished with 7 kinds of spring vegetables. The steamed rice then came with the fresh sea urchin, short-neck clam and wasabi buds with miso soup and pickled veges. The dessert was strawberry and setoka tangerine and sherry flavoured mousse topped with gecko citrus sherbet.

We were extremely full by the end of the meal so they packed up our steamed rice into little rice cakes for us to take back to our hotel. I must say that this meal was up there with one of the best that we have ever had. The chef himself came to send us off that night and we told him that we would be back again. Indeed, after such a delightful meal, we would recommend everyone to not miss it!

“Excellent food and company”
Reviewed 7 March 2014

The food was exquisite and ambience was excellent. Whilst not cheap, it wasn't overly expensive for three Michelin star dining. The chef made an extra effort to try and engage us despite the fact that we didn't speak Japanese. It added to the occasion. We set next to regular diners who told us that they considered the restaurant the best in Tokyo. Based on our limited experience, it certainly seemed so.
