“Pleasant budget hotel!”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

My bf and I had a pleasant stay here in April 2013. (TripAdvisor does not allow me to select this date in the pull down menu, but we indeed stayed here in April 2013, not Sept 2013).

Price: The cost for 4 nights was $378 USD, and did not include breakfast. We thought the accommodations suited the price well, but what would have made the stay feel like a great value was if breakfast had been included.

Location: The hotel is located in what felt like a very safe neighborhood, and was a little far from Shinjuku station by foot (20 mins), but on the way to Golden Gai.

The room: Our "double" room was small, but clean. There was just enough space to set down our luggages in the corner and walk around the bed. As an active couple that doesn’t spend much time in our hotel rooms, the size did not matter to us and seemed fine for lodging/sleeping. There was a small tub/shower with good water pressure and heat. We had one window facing the side of another building, and it was quiet. There was also a small desk and we had a good internet connection by wire, which we brought with us from the US (I recommend doing this in the event the wifi is not working). I

Hotel staff: Nice, most spoke English. Honestly, we didn't have many interactions with the staff, but when we did it was pleasant.

Hotel environment: The hallways are dark and dingy and kind of smelly, but you only really notice this when you're in the hallway, not in your room. We did not check out any of the amenities, and I'm not sure there actually were. I don't think we ever saw another person (except the receptionist) in the hotel! There are candies at the reception desk, which I enjoyed.

Food: We only tried breakfast. If you buy a breakfast it will come with something like eggs, toast, yogurt, and coffee, and we thought it was expensive/not worth it for what it was. We preferred getting something to eat elsewhere.

Overall a pleasant budget hotel!

Room Tip: Choose a room in the back on a higher floor for max quietness.

We got here late at night during Japan's Golden Week..the host was a bit stiff but warmed up to us in later days...got out two hotel rooms--the doors to the rooms were short and metallic, reminded me of a lock-up, the rooms were tight specially with our luggage but it was Tokyo and I was in a budget--the room was well- cozy, had a TV, a small bed for two, a small shower stall and rest room but we were happy to have a place--the streets were clean, pleasant and the neighborhood had some character--it was not near the main shinjuku train station but we could walk safely at night and day to the heart of the district..

Room Tip: the rooms will be tight but after a while they grow on you..if you are here to see the city--its rea...

Thank you for a stay with us the other days.
We're happy to hear you have a comfortable time with us.
As you told in a message, our guest room is a little bit small,
but we try to offer a friendly service to our customer.
Now a dsys, Shinjuku area is a very popular place in Tokyo.
We locates in safe and silent circumstance in the area.
We look forward to your next visit in the near future.

I appreciate the sweet stay for 2 days in Hotel Tateshina. The room price in the Shinjuku area are unbelievable. Moreover, the room is very comfortable and clean. Since the environment of the location is very silent. The location of Hotel Tateshina is in a small lane of Shinjuku 5 chome. However, the shopping mall and department stores are all around 5~10 minutes walking distance. Especially, the delicious Japanese style breakfast makes me unforgettable.

Reasonably clean, very centrally located and value-for-money Japanese breakfast. No frills, but since many upscale hotels charge for gym/ pool access in Tokyo, the money saved goes towards food, excursions, etc. Convenience stores within 50m radius, and countless restaurants (Japanese, western-style) in colourful Ni-chome.

This hotel is cheap and you certainly get what you pay for. It is a basic business hotel with no frills. The rooms are clean and functional.

Staff are polite and could adequately converse in English.

Good location as it is less than 10 minutes walk to Shinjuku station.

The whole place did smell of stale cigarettes even though try have clearly cleaned and deodorised the place. The second floor corridor smelt particularly bad as I assume the guests were chain smoking. The decoration in the rooms is old and everything was a kind of stained yellow from the smokers.

Above all, Hotel Tateshina has a great location. It is very close to the nightlife in Ni-chome. Also close to Shinjuku Sanchome station and Shinjuku station. The staff is friendly. While they do not speak much English, they will do whatever is required to communicate. I found them very helpful.

The rooms, hallways, elevators are all quite dated and could use an extensive refresh. There is always a slight cigarette odor even in hallways - but this is Japan where smoking is still common.

It seemed like the hotel was an 80/20 mix of business travelers and tourists.

This is probably the most affordable hotel in Shinjuku unless you opt for a capsule. It may have a few shortcomings, but the price reflects the quality.

We spent just one night here in March '13.

The location is great, very close (15 min) to the happening area of Shinjuku and a 15 to 20 min walk to Shinjuku JR railway station.

The reception are efficient and friendly - free bottle of water and map on arrival and reasonable English. The Hotel it's self is a bit aged - but well cleaned and everything works fine. Wired and wifi internet access in the room. The room it's self was fairly small - but then most hotels we stayed in had small rooms. The bathroom had a bath which was a bonus.

So all in all absolutley fine - no nasty surprises at all and ideal for a stopover. Would stay here again.
