“Good hotel good location. Very tedious Internet connection bad breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 July 2013 via mobile

The hotel is in a good location connected to the sunshine city. Very clean.

But very tedious Internet connection. Inthe rolf where Internet connection has to be in a jiffy it takes 8 passwords and 20 minutes of battle to get the connection. The breakfast was horrible

I remember this hotel as being one of the hottest properties when it first opened in 1980's. Sadly it still seems stuck in that time period and is badly in need of updating. Lobby is rather shabby. Rooms are clean, but furniture is worn.

That said, the staff is extremely professional and well-trained (this is part of the Prince Hotel chain, after all). The location is great, as long as you don't mind walking about 10 minutes to nearest station (Ikebukuro). There is a 24-hour well-stocked convenience store on the ground floor, and many dining choices at the two adjoining malls.

Clientele seems to be mostly tour groups from other Asian countries. There is an interesting small gift shop in the lobby catering to visitors from China. Lobby is a great place to sit and people-watch. I was able to check email on one of the coin-operated internet PCs there. 100yen for 10min of internet access plus free printing!

On my next trip to Tokyo (I visit every other year) I'll stay at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel instead. That hotel is right across the street from the station, and has a spectacular buffet venue (Hapuna).

The room in this hotel was small, but sufficient. The breakfast food from the buffet was acceptable, but not delicious. Internet was wired in the room (wireless in the lobby). It was underwhelming to say the least, but not a bad utilitarian choice for a few day stay in Tokyo.

i like it's location with attached shopping mall and convenience store with airport limo stopping outside the hotel. You will find all those I just mentioned a blessing when you travel with young kids. However, it's quite a distance away to subway so need to walk a little. There are quite a fair bit of shopping stuff around the Ikebukuro JR station. The rooms are old but equipped with toiletries. Bed are too soft though. May stay there again this June 2013, hopefully we see some changes.

The hotel is rather dated and old, it's time for some renovation. Wifi is only available at lobby and the connection is terrible! Many hotel guests hang out at the lobby and the place is terribly noisy. The room is tiny by japanese standard and the furniture is rather old. Despite that, the breakfast buffet selection is quite good! Locatiom wise - close to shopping areas and lots of food around.... Would stay again? Maybe not.....

It was an old hotel. Do not even let me start with the bathrooms - it's like those found in trains. Anyway, despite the plain mustard colored small bathrooms, they were able to provide some amenities though and hot water. The hotel is in a good location. It even has a mall connected to it (the mall looks old either - nonetheless, perfect for strolling/not so urgent shopping if you're tired from walking in the city). Outside the hotel are shopping districts which has at least an ABC shoe mart in every corner! Just a few steps from the hotel was the Ikebukuro train station which is a neighbor to popular department stores. The breakfast buffet is so-so. They need to improve on their lobby though since most of the people connecting to the WiFi crowd it, they at least need to provide more sofas. Some guests have no choice but sit on the floor. They also need to maintain cleanliness of the rooms specifically the beds. I happened to take a look at the foam I was sleeping in and it had stains over it - good thing we were checking out after a few minutes.

Recently had a two night stay here in a “Semi-Double” room, which really was a large single. This is an another example of a bubble era hotel that really hasn’t seen any updates since it opened in the 90’s. The rooms were clean, but the furniture and walls, etc. were showing signs of age and looked original. Especially in the bathroom the plastics were discoloring and another example was the desk had the top veneer starting to delaminate from water damage. Sound insulation was good and actually had some good views from the room of the city. It looks like they are mostly marketing this place to Chinese budget tour groups due to the overall condition, which must be nicer than what they expect in China but for what you can find in Tokyo it’s on the rough side. For this part of Tokyo I was expecting better and it really needs a major remodel.

One drawback to the hotels’ location is it’s a bit of a walk from the JR Station if you are lugging bags as you have to go through the busiest part of Ikebukuro- Sunshine Dori, and then through the bottom levels of Sunshine City to get to the hotel. It’s about 10-15 minutes of crowd dodging doing it the first time with luggage. Once there you do have tons of access for shopping and plenty of places to eat, but if you are planning to use this as a base for hopping around the city on the subway you might want to look closer to the station. It is in-between the Tokyo Metro Higashi-Ikebukuro station and the JR Ikebukuro station so it can give you some options to get around but it’s a walk to both. You can get to the Tokyo Metro through the 1st sub floor of Sunshine City (basically street level), its’ about 5-7 minutes through interconnecting walkways.

Dining in the hotel I found the prices to be high, especially with all the options in the mall & just outside the hotel. The breakfast buffet was about 2200 yen per day if you didn’t get it in a package. I found several options for breakfast outside the hotel, in the mall there is a McDonalds and French bakery Maison Kayser that opens early, a higher end grocery store and a Tully’s Coffee in the mall, and just outside the south side by the expressway (door is by Maison Kayser) there is a Jonathan’s and a Caffe Veloce down the street toward the JR station, and a Seiyu (Wal-Mart) grocery store. You can see all of this on Google maps, it’s labeled.

One thing to watch for if you booked through Hotels or Expedia. This is the second time where I’ve booked a non-smoking room through them and had it confirmed, but when I arrived they said the room was smoking. The first time the hotel quickly switched it back to non-smoking, but this time the Prince wouldn’t do it and kept insisting I made a smoking room reservation. I’m not sure if it’s due to issues in the two systems talking together and not translating the non-smoking properly, or the hotel switching room types due to the price since they usually get a higher rate for the non-smoking rooms adn sell rooms at a doscount to Hotels/Expedia. And this place looked to have a lot more smoking rooms so I think I got switched due to room price.

Overall if you can get it at a good price it’s OK if you just want a basic room that’s not fancy, but if it’s higher priced than The B or The Metropolitan look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Really insist on a non-smoking room, the smoking rooms have too many years of use. And get a high fl...
