“Great choice at this price range”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

Checked in on Fri for 2 nights with my girl friend and got a room on the higher floors facing Ueno station.

Room 4/5:
The place is very new, clean with smart trendy design. I really liked the view facing Ueno station but what's more impressive is the fact you get to see but not hear a thing from all the hustle and bustle! Size is pretty decent by Tokyo standard and the bed is alright - overall very comfortable stay.

Convenience 4/5:
The Metro is right at your door step and the JR is only 5min away across the bridge. Ueno is a well connected station, but I felt the location is a little overrated because the journey to a lot of the sightseeing areas down south or west is >30min. This is consistent with what my Japanese colleagues thinks. On the upside there's everything you need in the area in terms of food and necessities next to the JR (South side). The area is very local and feels very down to earth. Japan's google transit is awesome and accurate to the minute for trains/metro. So use that to guage whether Ueno is the place for you.

Service/Facility 3/5:
Don't expect much at this price range but the service was friendly and helpful. You do get reliable wifi in the room, but look elsewhere if you need sports facilities, business centers or something more luxurious.

Value 4/5:
For 15000 a night this is not a bad shout. You get a very comfortable room in a good location. Those who are looking for something simple that works and prefer to spend money elsewhere should definitely consider this hotel.

Room Tip: Go for the higher floors as I couldn't hear a thing from the outside.

Booked straight from their website, it costs between 15 and 16.000 per night early july, all inclusive and room only, in a twin room.
From the floor plan our twin room is one of the 2 largest, and they are situated on the front corner. All the other 18 rooms are of similar size and are either Single, or semi double ones.

We like :
- Very modern room with all the latest amenities and in soft-modern decoration theme. WiFi of course
- No need to say more about the Ueno area, where endless dining options are to be found, and a very convenient last port of call to Narita, either from JR, or from Keisei.

We don't :
- Nothing so far

Room Tip: Slightly more expensive, chose the twin ones for extra room

This hotel is in a great location close to Ueno station and two subway lines. It is an excellent base for exploring Tokyo as you have a number of transport options. The service at the hotel is excellent and whilst the rooms are small by Western standards, they are a good size compared to many Japanese hotels. There are a number of food options nearby but one of the best is a little Tempura restaurant called Togetsu in the small lane/road behind the hotel. It is on the second floor of the building and the restaurant owner spent time in Australia on a working holiday so English should be OK.

We have stayed here before and because it was good we decide to came back.

The hotel is very conveniently located at Ueno train station. The Narita airport express train is less than 10 minutes away.

The rooms are small as for most Japanese business hotels. They are well equipped though. The rooms and bathrooms are modern and clean.

The laundry room is just on one of the lower floors. This came in really handy as I had tons of clothes to wash.

Nothing bad about this hotel which is worth mentioning.

This hotel loves its pandas. There's a large fluffy panda in the lobby and I was upgraded to a panda room, completed with a panda teddy on the bed. This hotel is up to the usual Mitsui Garden standards: small but smart and clean rooms with a small Italian eatery in the lobby. The hotel is right outside Ueno station so is useful for travelling round the city and further afield by Shinkansen. It's also within walking distance of Tokyo University.

Having stayed in several hotels in Japan across various price ranges, I have to conclude that the Mitsui Garden Ueno is the one that has, thus far, provided the best bang for buck.

First and foremost, its location is excellent, being walking distance to the Ueno JR station (major station for both regional and inter-Tokyo travel), Keisei Ueno (quick access to the airport Skyliner) and the Tokyo Metro (also for inter-Tokyo travel). The proximity to these three stations means the average tourist/business traveler has most bases covered.

Then, there is the hotel itself. Check-in time's at 3pm, but I was allowed my room at 2pm (and possibly earlier if I'd bothered to come back before then). Rooms are modern and I love how you simply have to tap your keycard to unlock your room door instead of going through the old-school insertion process.

Rooms, while not large by any means, are larger than your average Tokyo hotel. Bathrooms are also not the pre-fab plastic cases you've come to accept at lower-end Japanese hotels, but regular tiled affairs.

Ladies get a hot pink ionic hairdryer, hair thongs, facial steamer cum bedside humidifier and PJs; every room gets a stand-up humidifier and cellphone charger. This is more than is provided even at hotels that cost much more. Free mineral water is provided to all guests - you can ask for more if you go through the one bottle they give you and service is fairly prompt

I felt perfectly comfortable in my moderate single room.

Beds are more comfortable than most (mattresses even at much higher end hotels in Japan tend to be too hard for my liking but not this one which was just right) and the half beads/half down (don't quote me on this) pillow provided adequate head support. I liked it better than my own pillow at home!

Sleep quality was also great due to the soundproofing provided by the double glazed windows (you only hear the occasional wail of an ambulance) and highly functional black-out curtains (you can barely tell what time of the day it is).

Working at the desk was totally pleasant as you get a view of the street from just beyond the boundaries of your laptop. Windows can also be opened, and that's not something you get from every hotel room.

Overall, this was one of the most pleasant stays I've had in Tokyo.

Minor issues:

Everything was clean except for a single white hair on the bathroom counter. I left it there on purpose to test how meticulous the cleaner would be, and the next day, the hair was gone.

The water jug holder wasn't sturdy as one of its rubber feet was missing, causing water to slosh about. I remedied this using a piece of paper as it seemed too minor an issue to be fussing about.

The bedside humidifier was a tad too big for the small space available on the bedside table, due to the placement of the lighting switch board.

They initially said they would bring my bags up to my room but when the time came, just asked if I would like to bring them up myself (which I did).

Despite all this, I still highly recommend this hotel if you're not the sort who demands a gym and room service. This facility provides a highly convenient, comfortable stay at a price that doesn't break the bank and this is something that's fairly difficult to find in a city such as Tokyo.
