Easy access from Ueno. The room was extremely clean, comfortable and practical and had traditional touches which is surprising find in Tokyo. Room service is Awesome! There is complimentary tea, slippers & yakatas in room. Bed was comfortable and there's free WiFi, coin laundry facilities etc. Very close to by Ueno Zoon, parks, shrines, Akiba! Definetly an ideal spot to stay ^^

Room Tip: Always as for an "evening key" if you are planning to stay later than 10pm.

I have been staying at Ryokan Sawanoya every three years for over twenty years and it is my first choice for accommodation in Tokyo. The location ins close to Ueno Station and Nezu Station and in a delightful old district of Tokyo with excellent restaurants nearby. The attention to detail and care afforded by the family staff at Ryokan Sawanoya is outstanding and there are no matters too small for their attention and solution. There is an excellent choice of breakfast every day. There is internet access available free at the Ryokan too. The building is solidly constructed and quite earthquake and fire safe. Access from Narita and Haneda airports is very direct and easy. The rooms of the Ryokan are most comfortable and well appointed with balconies. The washing, ironing and ablution facilities are very good.
I cannot think of a better or more congenial place to stay in Tokyo.

Room Tip: The rooms are all quiet as there is little traffic in the area. There are three floors in the build...

We stayed in this wonderful ryokan in late February after a ski trip in Niseko. It was really easy to book online beforehand. It is in a nice quiet area and not far to walk to from Nezu station. The Sawa family are incredibly polite, friendly and helpful. Lots of information available and free tea and coffee and water downstairs as well as green tea in your room. Also free wifi. We booked a room without en suite but the shared bathing rooms are so nice this isn't a problem at all. Best bathing experience ever my friend said! Everything is scrupulously clean. It was cold in the room but the heater/air conditioning unit warmed it up nicely. If you stay out after 11pm you can get a key to let yourself in. If you have a lot of luggage as we did I would recommend getting a taxi to Ueno station and get the Keisei Skyliner to Narita Airport to save you having to make changes traveling from Nezu.

Great ryokan near Ueno. I have stayed here 3 times and would definitely recommend this inn for travelers to Tokyo. Excellent value and the Sawa family is so nice. The breakfast was also very good. I'm looking forward to my next visit.

We stayed over a weekend in February on our first trip to Japan. We wanted to stay in a traditional Japanese guest house rather than an overpriced faceless hotel in the middle of the city. So glad we did! From beginning to end our experience was perfect in every way. From the wonderful choice of TWO onsens, to the spotlessly clean rooms, Yukatas, slippers and delicious breakfast, we loved every moment. The Sawa family are beyond friendly and helpful without exception; supplying everything we needed and more (including free umbrellas during the heaviest snowfall in 45 years!) The only thing I missed was a lounge area to relax in during the evenings - but I understand this is a Western convenience; the Japanese style does not usually include a living room area as such. Station was an easy walk, fabulous restaurants also and just wandering around the area was so pretty and quaint. Will definitely stay again! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making us fall in love with Japan.

Room Tip: Japanese style room was perfect. Wonderful soft warm bed linen.

Ryokan Sawanoya was my introduction to Japan, as I came here directly from the airport on my arrival to Tokyo. I cannot recommend Sawanoya highly enough! The staff were incredibly friendly, courteous and welcoming; the facilities were beautiful, cozy, and comfortable; my stay was everything I hoped an introduction to Japan would be.

I arrived late (11 pm) and even though the ryokan closed at 11 pm, I was given a phone number to call so I could arrive after hours. The beautiful, cozy rooms with tatami mats, textured walls, and authentic tea service helped me feel like I was having an authentic, traditional Japan experience. The neighborhood was quiet, tidy, and interesting to explore, and the location is close to the metro, a huge park, great museums and other Tokyo attractions.

Mostly, however, the polite, thoughtful staff, who made me feel so welcome, made my experience so special. The whole family who runs the ryokan came outside to wave me goodbye on my departure. They are a credit to the nation of Japan and exemplify the hospitality, grace and generosity found in this beautiful country, rich with tradition and culture.

Room Tip: In keeping with Japanese tradition, rooms are tidy, cozy, and offer enough space to unpack and be co...

The location in Yanaka is peaceful and very quiet. The room and toilet at Ryokan Sawanoya is very clean. The hot bath is an experience not to be missed.
It is very near to the Nezu station where you can travel anywhere in Tokyo.
