We stayed at this Ryokan for three nights recently on our five visit to Japan. Itis family run and everyone was helpful, friendly and very efficient.
The ryokan is very clean and has a very pleasant common area for breakfast, which was cheap and good. We stayed in a room with its own bath which was lovely but there are also traditional baths you can use together privately if you book a room with shared facilities.
The area around the ryokan is one of the nicest in Tokyo and its is also very easy to get from here to other areas.
We have stayed in all kinds of accommodation across Japan and would return here. For the price it is exceptional, it deserves all of its good reviews.

Few rooms: clean and confortable.
Common toilets.
washing mashine service and space to dry our clothes.
Two onsen: you can have, privately, your own hot bath.
Place of the ryokan: quite and not far from the metro station.

Straight off the plane and a train trip into Tokyo our arrival at Ryokan Sawanoya was a wonderful and welcome relief. From the very first moment of our arrival to the very last moment of our departure this place was a gem and and our hosts friendly and hospitable. It was simple, clean, well organized, relaxing and home for two days. Great location - not far from Ueno Park, Zoo and the National Museum.

Room Tip: Shared bathroom but kind of quaint.

It's obvious that the family who owns this Ryokan wants your vacation to be a success. When you check in they provide you with a plethora of information about Tokyo and Ueno. There is also a great computer in the lobby to use in order to find attractions and how to get to those attractions throughout Tokyo. Very helpful.

They do lock up at 11:00 pm, but provide a night key to those who want to access the Ryokan later in the night. Although, subways stop at midnight anyways and it's probably best that if you're going to Tokyo for the nightlife then Ueno probably isn't the best area to stay in.

The bath area was great. I was surprised that it was a single bath that locked. I thought that might cause issues in terms of when I would be able to bathe, but it wasn't a problem. Each night I was there I was able to walk down and it was unoccupied. The bath was very relaxing and looked out to a wooded area.

The room was very clean and they provided green tea loose leaves, which was great. Although I didn't have a bath room in my room there was a sink, which was nice. The air conditioning also worked really well and I slept soundly each night.

The mattress is very firm, which wasn't a problem for me, but if you're looking for a western style room/bed this is not the place for you.

Anyone looking for a peaceful place to stay while in Tokyo I would highly recommend Ryokan Sawanoya.

We can't recommend Ryokan Sawanoya highly enough. Friendly, hospitable, charming and genteel. It was a place you looked forward to returning to at the end of a long day walking in Tokyo. The onsen was perfect respite for weary muscles. The family owners are friendly, attentive and go out of their way to help, whether that is arranging a taxi or bringing in your laundry unprompted when rain threatens. Breakfast was simple but delicious and modestly priced (brewed coffee the only improvement we would suggest). It was a memorable way to start our trip to Japan and we would look forward to returning.
