Ueno is one of the major touristy parts of Tokyo. The huge JR Ueno station will get you here and has direct trains to Narita airport. Around the station people love handing out free packs of tissues, which is pretty handy. Ueno park is huge and houses the Zoo and a great boating lake. You will find Tokyo's best museums here, notably the National Museum. One the opposite side of the train tracks is the shopping / restaurant part of Ueno, jam packed with choices.

This is one great place to blow a wad of cash. Unlike temple street in Hong Kong where one might worry about the authenticity of the merchandise being sold, here all the items are real, just a couple of seasons old. You can get really great deals here. One of my son's senseis was able to get Nike Messi soccer shoes for approximately $10 US. This is also a great place to buy souvenirs and gifts to take home to family and friends. My son loved going to the groceries here where he would buy giant Pokki sticks and different flavored kit-kat chocolates. Ueno is great for buying shoes, sporting gear, out door wear. perfumes, make up, toys. Be sure get off the main street and enter the side alleys. There are stores there that sell collectibles and vintage items.

I leaved in Tokyo for 3 years. My boyfriend and i would always drop by Ueno if we are really craving for sushi any time of the day. It's also safe to come here at night.
