“Outstanding... again!”

We stumbled across this hidden slice of heaven last year. We have since had our 3rd lunch here in as many visits to Somerset. With such high expectations set by previous visits - one would normally fear that it will not reach such heady heights...but once again we have been impressed. Fresh ingredients, locally sourced and freshly cooked. Lamb that is properly rested, and the most delicious monkfish with scallops that I have had the pleasue of eating. we have since tried many higher ranking places in Somerset, and we personally feels this exceeds anywhere by far. Also, in this pristine place, dogs are allowed in the comfortable, still lovely to dine in 'bar area'. Which is great for a couple for have a little dog, but still wish to eat well!

My partner and I went away for our first child free weekend for about four years last week. Couldn't have found a better place. The food was the star, being perfectly cooked, astoundingly local, beautifully presented, simple and delicious! Sally and Jools are gentle and respectful, but fun. We felt utterly spoilt - it was wonderful! And the rooms were just right, small but thoughtfully presented. We will return and spread the word!

Room Tip: Most have king size beds, though one is a twin.

Last weekend we spent 2 nights at The Pilgrims. We could not fault the accommodation. Very relaxing and comfortable. The food was fantastic. We were looked after so well by our hosts. A meal was cooked especially for us on the Sunday evening. Do they ever rest?

Pilgrims is a little of the beaten track and looks rather unwelcoming from outside, but all changes once you enter. We received a friendly greeting and the owner prepared us a complimentary pot of tea. There are 5 bedrooms in a barn conversion, each opening onto a shared garden area. The rooms are small, but nicely appointed. Our bathroom was also quite small, but luxurious with a roll top bath and a separate overhead rain shower, quality toiletries, robes and slippers. The breakfast was excellent with home made bread and preserves and locally sourced meats.
A feature of the hotel is the food, all of which is locally sourced and mainly home made. Our meal was simple in presentation, but made special by the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the cooking. I enjoyed an excellent ham terrine and a main course of scallops and monkfish. Unusually the star turn was the vegetables which featured perfectly cooked, flavoursome and steaming hot beetroot, red chard, cauliflower and beans. The hotel makes a virtue of slow cooked food and we felt very comfortable lingering in the bar over drinks after we had eaten. If you wanted to break a journey en route to Cornwall from the East you could do a lot worse than the Pilgrims.

Many lunches here over the years.. We have never had a bad meal. Highly recommended .Try the fillet steak or the fish soup. The soup that thinks it is a stew. The fish dish is usually ordered by my wife and is always beautify cooked. The wine list is also good.

Stayed here for a couple of night whilst on a business trip to the area.
The room was beautifully presented and the welcome as warm as you could hope for, nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel at home instantly. The bathroom was superb, large bath and walk in shower and everything spotlessly clean.
Now......food. What can I say? The reviews on tripadvisor have all been positive but, in our opinion, they don't do the quality of the food justice. Every meal was cooked by Jools to absolute perfection and the breakfasts were to die for! All of the ingredients are locally sourced and their quality shines through.
If you are visiting Castle Cary or the surrounding area, do yourself a favour and book in here (if only for dinner).

Sally and Jools....many thanks for a great stay, we'll be back soon for the fish challenge!!!
