“Staff save the day at Playa Real”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2013

I suppose hotel reviews - just like revenge - are dishes best served cold as I would have slated this hotel had I written this straight after arrival. But after seven days it gets a decent rating due to the sheer friendliness and enthusiasm of its staff and the quality and value of the all inclusive offer. Public spaces are very smart including the restaurant and the buffet style meals provided decent quality and a wide choice, including at breakfast. The location, by the way, is superb - literally right on the beach and boardwalk for the wonderful little bars and restaurants for B and B and HBers (Talamanca is delightfully unspoiled).

Now for some downsides. While bathrooms are spotless the rooms are rather tired. Stained carpets, a tiny TV from the 1980s (albeit with Sky News), no safes and a bed (one queen size double when I'd actually paid for a twin) which looked as if it had come from an army camp and gave me a bad back on the first night! My room was in a quiet corner of the hotel though (with a partial seaview).

The pool and garden area - while wonderfully positioned for all-day sunshine- is a bit chaotic dominated by smokers (even allowed at the outside bar - very unpleasant when ordering a drink or snack) and by the claiming-this-sun-bed-with-my-towel brigade. It's a nice pool but I spent most of my time on the beach.

Finally - no free wi-fi but instead a bizarre pay as you go voucher system while not wildly expensive expects you to use up what you've purchased on the same log-in (yes even 12 hours!).

As I recall the Playa Real closed for a season a couple of years back and that was an opportunity methinks to totally overhaul the place - which clearly hasn't been done in the bedrooms.

I won't be going there again unless the rooms get a make-over and smokers are confined to a converted phone box (!) but I have to say the staff (particularly at the pool bar) were incredibly friendly and helpful and ensured I enjoyed a very pleasant stay in spite of my first impressions...

This was our 4th time at Playa Real and hopefully it won't be our last stay. Rumours abound - some say it's going to be turned into luxury apartments, others say it's going to be pulled down and replaced with a 5 star boutique hotel. It's a bit obvious that something is going to happen as they haven't spent any money on refurbishment this year. What a shame if it does go all upmarket and out of our league. It's in the most beautiful location - beach on the doorstep and a lovely walk to the Marina and then on to Ibiza Town - with views of Dalt Vila all the way. The biggest loss of all will be the wonderful people who staff the hotel - Paco, Maria, Carlos, Juan Dorada, Katarina, Natalia, Willie to name but a few who have made all our stays that bit special. We had tears in our eyes as we said our goodbyes..... let's hope it's just adios for now.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a sea view if possible

My husband and I have just returned from a five night stay at the hotel which is ideally situated right on the beach, not far from the airport. We took a bed and breakfast option which suited us fine, ample choice.
We enjoyed the wooden walkway along the beach which takes you to Talamanca town and stopped off at some of the bars/restaurants along the way, very safe to walk day and night. If you are sportive this is ideal for running. The old town is about a ten minute drive or 45 minute walk.
We loved the pool and surrounding area, lovely garden. Found the staff friendly, especially in the dining room and bar/pool bar. Hats off to Mario on reception for sorting out our refund from Hotel.com.
Downside is that the hotel is in dire need of TLC - carpets are stained and worn out, one stain on our carpet in the room by the balcony door was awfully large and they seemed to have put quite a lot of chemical down to try and clean it. When we opened the room in the evening we were hit by a strong smell either from carpet cleaner or insect repellent. Fortunately we could open the sliding door to air it off but it had to be closed at night. I am sure they will do some renovations as in some places the paint is also peeling.
We hired a car from Centauro Rent a Car - very efficient - and managed to find our way around without a GPS. The roads are in very good condition and we found the motorists in general to be friendly. Being a small island it did not take long to visit some of the other beaches and attractions. We will definitely be back one day.

As a 3 star hotel, Hotel Playa Real in Talamanca is an excellent base for exploring Ibiza. My wife and I are just back from an 11 night stay (our 4th time visiting the hotel), and again we thoroughly enjoyed it. We have read a lot of poor reviews of the hotel in the past, which we feel are very unfair given the fact that this is clearly a 3 star hotel and the price for all inclusive works out about £50 per day. For that it is an absolute bargain!

The hotel has lovely grounds and nice pool (if a bit cold) and it is right next to the beach. The rooms are OK (if a bit tired) but perfectly clean and they all had a fridge and had digital TV this year too (though the only English Channel was Sky News!)

The food at the restaurant was okay, but not great. If you are expecting gourmet food then you will be disappointed, but it is a 3 star hotel! There is a good choice of bread and salads available, but the cooked food became a bit repetitive.....but it was perfectly nice. Main options were pastas, stews, chips, pizza, fish and chicken.

The bar is well run and I never waited more than a couple of minutes to get served, plus the all inclusive offer included sangria, cocktails and cava, and well as the usual beers and spirits. The reception staff are helpful, and there is a towel service for a one off deposit of 10 Euros for the duration of your stay (and you can change the towels daily). There is a safe in each room, but this costs 4 Euros per day plus a 10 Euro deposit, and Wi fi is also available (1 Euro for 30 min, 2 Euros for 90 mins).

A walkway runs from the rear of the hotel runs all the way to Talamanca, past a lot of lovely bars and restaurants, and to walk all the way into Ibiza town itself is only about a 30 minute stroll. The hotel is also only a 5 minute walk away from Pacha and 10 minutes in a taxi (about 15 Euros) to Amnesia and Privelige, and about 25 Euros across to San Antonio. Its about 7 Euros in a taxi into Ibiza Town itself, though you can also stroll down to the port at Talamanca and get a boat across for about 4 Euros return.

All in all an excellent base and I would definitely recommend it.

This hotel was chosen for its location more than anything. The rooms were also clean and beds were reasonably comfortable.

The breakfast was however horrendous and I managed the croissants (get them early), and the fried eggs. The bacon looked revolting, as did the rest.

I will also credit the staff with trying very hard to entertain guests during a brief storm.

If you are planning a 3-4 day break with friends, this place is fine but if you want something with a bit of luxury, this is not your place!

Arrived home on Friday after a lovely week at playa real. Fantastic location, as our party of 4 (aged. 23, 27, 34 & 45) wanted to be away from the crowds in the daytime and easy travel to the clubs at night. Staff great, food great, room spacious, decor tired, good pool right next to the beach, sports & entertainments if you want it, kayaking. All inclusive drinks til 11pm (def recommend as drinking in the clubs is VERY expensive) Bus stop outside hotel into town or a 30 min walk. Disco bus from San Antonio drops u back at Pascha which is 15 mins walk away. All in all great hotel, would def return next year.

This is a clean friendly budget hotel, fairly basic breakfast but there was fresh fruit, the front desk staff cannot do enough to help you with bookings, informations and any questions you have. They were a pleasure to deal with.
It was quiet at night, probably nicer to be in an upper floor with a beach side view of some sort, and it is adjacent to a variety of beach side restaurants with easy access to ibiza town so a good location for getting about.

Room Tip: 2nd floor with a sea view
