“Food, Food, Absolutely Glorious Food! And wonderful hosts!”
Reviewed 18 August 2013

We had been looking for a place for my parents to spend a couple of days for a holiday before my father had to go into hospital for knee surgery, and were slowly losing hope of trying somewhere new. By complete luck, I looked at the KGBdeals website and saw an offer for two nights for two plus breakfast both days and a three course dinner at the Grapes and jumped at it. Not really knowing what to expect, since they had never been to the area, we finally found out a few dates we could spare and rang up the hotel, who were able to fit us in precisely within the dates we needed. When they came back, my parents, who aren't remotely computer-savvy and who aren't fans of the net by any means, requested within half an hour that I make sure to post a review for them on TripAdvisor, so what follows is from them:

Our hosts at the hotel, Peter and Gayle (not sure of the spelling) were extremely thoughtful and could not do enough for us. The bartender, Adam, was kind enough to suggest jugs of iced water with lemon when we were unable to accept an alcoholic drink, which was a lovely refreshing drink, and our waitress Heather was always ready with a smile. All in all, the staff alone would have made this holiday one to remember. We've traveled throughout North America and Europe in our younger days, but we have never had finer food than we had at the restaurant during our stay, both in quality and quantity. Our deepest thanks to all for a wonderful holiday!

While exploring the town, we came upon T Eliot's butcher, who should be congratulated on the quality of their produce. We brought home some meat with us and found the brisket to be the best we've had (not to mention the sausages!). Definitely worth a visit if you have a way to take some home with you!

Stayed here with a groupon voucher as part of our holiday, and what a find! Our room (room 2) was small and a bit dated, but spotlessly clean. Plumbing a bit strange...could hear everything from adjoining room, but the food more than made up for any shortcomings. The surf n turf we had on the 1st night was AMAZING, as was everything else (huge compliments to the chef), and the offer of two rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £25 on the 2nd night was phenomenal. The staff were lovely, friendly, and attentive. When the waitress asked on the 2nd night how we'd slept and I told her I'd been hot in the night, on returning to our room later found she'd left a fan for us! The breakfasts were equally good, and set us up for the day. I don't know how they do it for what we paid, but will definitely go again when we next visit the area, and incidentally, the village is so pretty and the locals equally friendly. Treat yourselves...you won't be disappointed.

we always eat locally when away with our camper van, the Grapes hotel was recommended, and rightly so, the lite bites menu looks really good, but the meals we had from the evening menu were first class and we will definately go there on our next vist.

My friends and I visited last weekend for our evening meal and the whole evening was a lovely experience. We popped in the day before to book our table and the lady was very friendly. When we arrived on the Saturday eve, we were quite tired and asked to be shown to our table straight away then we could get settled. The staff were all very friendly and we had a few laughs and jokes together about different things. The menu had plenty to choose from and when it arrived the food was the nicest I have tasted in a long time and the portions were quite substantial, especially the dessert, which was gorgeous, in fact having seen other desserts passing to other diners it was difficult to choose which one to have!! We also had 2 bottles of wine between 3 of us and the bill was just over £25 each, which was another nice surprise. I will definitely be visiting here again and would recommend anyone else in the area to try it too!! Top Class!

We were on a Borders tour and stayed at The Grapes for 2 nights. Taking rooms 2 and 4, one of our party had been before and said he felt it had gotten a bit shabbier since the previous stay. That said, we were given a warm welcome and taken directly to our rooms. We stayed in #2 which had 2 single beds that were truly singles -- very narrow and quite short. They were, unfortunately, also very uncomfortable with bedsprings poking out and little padding throughout. However, that is where the complaints end.

Everything else made for a great stay. The staff couldn't have been more accomodating and the food was top flight. We ate breakfast in the morning (included in the room) and were delighted with the selection of hot and cold. It was substantial enough to skip lunch while we were out exploring. Dinner both nights we took in the dining room, and again the food was spot on. Good selections, locally sourced foods, huge portions and friendly service.

The bathroom was a bit peculiar, but once we figured out the idiosincracies, it became more amusing than annoying. The toliet made great whooshing noises followed by something akin to a blender, and the shower punp engaged every 15 seconds while being used, but the water was always hot and plentiful. We did try to limit our showers and flushing after 10pm to respect the other guests, and it seemed this was an unspoken consideration of all the other rooms around us, as the hotel was very quiet otherwise.

for the techies -- wireless internet was provided free, and you will get a chuckle at the password when you inquire at the bar. Mobile phone signals are almost non-existent and there are no telephones in the rooms.

Newcastleton is a lovely small village with a few services, but if in need of a bit more, a visit to Longtown or Wawick ("Hoyk") will prove useful. And the secenery is breathtaking!

Room Tip: While there are only 8 rooms here, you may want to have a look at the room before taking it. Room #2...

During our 2 week stay near Newcastleton we had a few meals at The Grapes, all of which were excellent both in quality and value. The light bite menu (before 6.30pm) at under £7 is amazing value for money, with no reduction in quality (or meal size, as far as we could see). We also had a more formal meal in the dining room which, again, was of the highest standard. The couple in charge were so nice and friendly, and the chef was great with a member of our family who needed a gluten free option. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Thank you to all at The Grapes, and we hope to be back soon.
