While scallop on black pudding might be a delight for folks of Celtic origin, I consider it as a scallop rape, my foolish mistake to order it. At any rate the scallop need to remain tender and juicy which would have required to cut them horizontally and fry them in butter for 30 sec on each side. Both the pudding and the scallop were too dry. 1 scallops costs about € 1. One kg pudding probably € 8. The served 5 scallops on pudding do not justify the price charged. The crab claws on the other hand were of nice size but their preparation not outstanding. Either prices for food and accommodation in Ireland must come down by 20% or the quality and services quite a lot improved and this not only by means of undeserved boosted ratings resulting in fabulous and superb.

Cecily H, Manager at Donnellys of Barna, responded to this review, 1 July 2014
Dear Ramsay_Bocuse

Scallop & black pudding is indeed a delight for us “folks of Celtic origin”.
We have numerous compliments on this dish and it is one of our best-selling menu items.

Thank you for your ideas on how they should be cooked. Perhaps you can show us how when you return. Indeed at the purchase prices you suggest you might bring some scallops with you, considering we pay on average €27/kg.

A third of the content in your review is related totally to the prices of food, accommodation and services in general in Ireland which seems rather like a “bit of a rant” as we “folks of Celtic Origin” would say.
Perhaps you should address these particular comments to your “Ms Merkel”, she gave us the money.

Thank you,
Cecily & the team at Donnellys.

“Great pub, good restaurant in Galway suburb.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 June 2014

Three seniors stayed three nights in the Salthill area of Galway, and had afternoon libations at Donnelly's at the suggestion of the innkeepers. We decided to try it for dinner as well, and ended up having dinner there all three evenings. The place is deservedly packed, both the bar and restaurant, so reservations are suggested. The menu is varied, the food is very good if not great, and the service is perfectly acceptable given the crowd. The crowd is largely local, especially in the bar area, as opposed to the touristy types and the resulting ambience is quite nice. It's especially convenient to the Salthill area, and there's parking next door if Donnelly's lot is full. We enjoyed all our time there.

“No welcome but really lovely food and good atmosphere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 June 2014

i think the staff were so busy that they just didn't get to give us a warm welcome but they were very pleasant when they finally made it to our table. I had the most delicious fish pie, full of chunky bits of fish. Husband had home made burger which was OK but not the best, chips were excellent however. Would recommend. Full of locals and tourists alike which is always nice.

“Excellent venue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 June 2014

This restaurant came recommended and did not disappoint for quality and value. We went on a Monday night and would recommend that reservations should be made as people were queuing and waiting for seating. Full of locals which is also a good sign.
