“Good Base for Connemara Trip”
Reviewed 17 August 2009

After reading all the reviews on Tripadvisor I was convinced that some where fake but after staying for the Sat & Sunday of the August weekend I believe them to be true.

We had a suite for the two days and used it as a base for Connemara which was perfect. The village itself is a non event but the bakery and the coffee shop in the village were very good. There was a very nice looking restaurant also in the town which we never got to.

The hotel is good and the rooms funkily decorated. The bar is big and lively but we didn't spend too much time there as my wife is pregnant. We did spend an evening in there restaurant which was very nice and would recommend it as well as lunch and breakfast in the pins. Food were very good. One thing don't bother with room servce breakfast which was nothing to write home about and parking wasn't great as it seem a lot of people in for a pint taking up residents parking spaces.

Overall a good hotel and would recommend it for all.

Recently stayed in this lovely hotel, it's quite funky and I loved the decor. It's on the main street in Barna, great place to base yourself in Glaway, on the coast but not far from the city. Bedrooms are lovey and they can provide you with a seaweed bath in your bedroom..very relaxing! We ate across the road in a small pub/restaurant, food was ok there. Breakfast in the hotel was fine. I would return to this hotel again

We went to see a show in the Galway Arts Festival and decided to stay up in Barna to get out of the city, and away from the throngs. Delighted we did too. We got a quiet, clean suite which had a second party-type room attached with a bar, should we fancy a nightcap on our return. Before going to town, we had a meal in the hotel restaurant. That was so good, it almost kept us from making the show. The menu offers good variety, meat and fish dishes with a native/ local edge, including platters to share. The wine list appears to have won every international award possible, so we took advice and were easily and well led. All staff we came across did the place proud.
The Twelve comes over effortless and cosy, and we will return to use it as a base again, perhaps not even leaving the premises next time. Although I'm told that just down the road at the pier, there is another wonderful restaurant called O'Grady's...

great wine list and cocktail bar here - food is excellent also. loved the suite and the fact that there is a beach across the road is an adde attraction. Very dog friendly for those who cannot bear to leave their four legged friends behind. Overall, a fantastic experience - but if you do go for the wine list and the cocktails (and I highly recommend you do), turn off the coloured lights over the mirror in the bathroom (not very hangover friendly).

I had a fantastic stay.

Was really looking forward to a few nights in this hotel and despite the long drive was happy enough to have a drink in the bar while we waited for our room to be ready when we arrived at 5pm (would have been less happy if we'd arrived at 3pm when they say you can check-in!). The welcome note and chocolates were a nice touch and the room was lovely - yes, they're dark, but that's ok by me.

Our room was wheelchair-friendly so instead of a bath we had a large shower enclosed by those awful, cheap shower curtains. The 'sealant' strip on the floor had seen better days and so most of the bathroom floor was a pool of water after every shower. It was also in need of a good scrub. Decided to forego the in-room seaweed bath on offer having assessed the potential of the sink as a substitute!

We didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel so I can't really comment on the bar or food except to say that the breakfast was good and thankfully served till 11am.

Overall the hotel gives the impression that a lot of thought, and expense, has gone into it's design and furnishing. It certainly has potential to deliver that 'wow' factor but I think it would benefit from more attention to detail - a thorough spring clean, properly stocked mini-bars, coffee in the rooms instead of just teabags, housekeeping that spends a little more time in each room so that it's not left with the ironing board in the middle of the floor and cushions are put back on the bed etc.

Each of these things is small in itself but when you're paying €200 a night you do take those things for granted and when it's not delivered then you're left feeling a little disappointed.

We absolutely enjoyed The Twelve Hotel and would highly recommend it for anyone looking for a beautiful and relaxing location! The little touches, chocolate covered strawberries and a personal note waiting for us in the room were a wonderful addition to the stellar customer service we received upon checking in. The beautifully appointed room and bathroom (both large) relaxed you the moment you walked inside. The free internet was a huge plus to an already wonderful package. We loved it, and wished all our hotels were as wonderful as The Twelve was!!!!

This was our second visit and we will go back again. The Twelve is more like a local with classy rooms than an hotel. The welcome is warm and the handwritten note and shortbread, strawberries and chocolate are a lovely touch. The Voya seaweed products are great, it's luxury all the way. The breakfast menu has plenty of variety and we enjoyed dinner in the West Restaurant on this visit (it was booked out the last time). It's chic and it's noisy, not the place for a quiet retreat, but there are plenty of secluded beaches west into Connemara to be enjoyed it you want some solitude. f you want a change there are plenty of eating options in Bearna. We have tried McDonaghs and O'Gradys on the Pier - both excellent.
