Review of The Happy Castle

The Happy Castle
Ranked #4 of 7 things to do in Penicuik
Attraction details
Reviewed 1 August 2013

Had friends up from down south so decided to pop to the happy castle with 2 x 6yr olds and a 3 yr old. Got there in the afternoon and could tell by the car park that it was busy. On getting inside it cost near £15 for the 3 kids and there was no seats/tables left for us adults to sit at. The place was extremely hot and verging on uncomfortable. We managed to get a seat/table within 5 minutes and staff were helping customers that didn't have seats to find some.

The play area is large and the kids had a ball without complaint apart from also being too hot from running about but in the warm stuffy building that was to be expected.

Overall a decent couple of hours out and the food going past looked to other tables looked good enough. Air conditioning and better quality table and chairs could move this place up a level. Worth a visit if in the area.

-Separate area for under 3s
-Most suited to kids 4+
-Slightly expensive at over £4
-Smells a little bit of cooking/frying - could do with windows being opened overnight
-The website is not valid any more - the staff don't know why its still up and running but dates and times etc are not valid
-Biggest draw is the size of the place - loads of different areas and slides - our 20 month old runs all over the place - but due to the stairs we have to go on the soft play (main area) with him

I've been looking for a new soft play for my 17th Month old to try out. After browsing the web for a while, I came across Happy Castle which I had never heard of or been told about.
We went today and I have very mixed feelings about it.

POSITIVES:
- areas are divided for different ages groups
- the soft play frame is very big, colourful and fun
- the place was clean
- the price is reasonable

NEGATIVES:
- It shows signs of aging: a leak of paint, a new counter for the café, better displays (rather than sheets of paper attached with blue tak) would brighten up the place
- the room is very dark and could benefit some new and bright lighting
- the atmosphere felt a bit too quiet: maybe some music would make it cheerier
- It was a bit smelly...feet, pucky

I do believe the place has great potential for children and parents to have a good time...as well as making more money!...a little bit of TLC and good advertising could give serious competition to Maddie and Mark's in Ocean Terminal!

What to do with a 3 year old on a dull day? Go to The Happy Castle in Penicuik. Going right through Penicuik from Edinburgh and turn left. You turn right at some houses and through what looks like an old railway bridge and you're there! Kids take off shoes and just wear socks for climbing on thick foam covered in plastic, so quite safe. Rope bridges to cross and tunnels to slide down for older ones with a small area for toddlers equipped with rocking crocodiles etc. Seems a great meeting place for Mums with older children and newborn babies. Food, coffees and drinks and crisps available at a counter and adults just plonk themselves at a table and let the children run riot having great fun. £4.25 for the 3 year old for 2 hours but a bit more for older children. Delighted to find this place
