“Prentensions of Grandeur”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

This new and refurbished hotel looks the part but does not deliver a quality tourist friendly experience. We arrived full of excitement to experience this ancient little town and wine region, but were soured by our dealings with the hotel owners and some of the staff.
It began with our check-in experience dealing with the curt and unsmiling girl at reception. Our room faced into the enclosed courtyard which looks ok at first but has serious flaws. There is absolutely no fresh air-flow into the room as the windows open onto the sealed and airtight internal courtyard. The lamp in the fashionable courtyard lounge below is left on for effect all night, and the light shines into your room through the curtains. As a result we had some of the worst nights sleep ever at this hotel out of the entire holiday. We ate in the flash dining room, on our first night and were disappointed by the quality of cooking and price. I ordered pork fillet with wild mushrooms, what arrived was a brown object with slightly pointed ends arranged centally on the plate with lumpy brown objects stuck to it and a thick brown sauce ringing the meat. There were no vegetable garnish and the brown sauce was a commercial variety from a packet. People at other tables in the restaurant looked equally disappointed when their food arrived. The bar staff and waiter by contrast were friendly and provided excellent service. We found the owners particulary unfriendly and they had habit of looking down their nose at us, as though we did not meet their standard - perhaps it was because we could only speak a little Spanish. It certainly is no way to treat a guest! Behind the fake smile we found the breakfast attendant was quite sneery as well, which is not what you need first thing in the morning. My advice, don't bother with Laguardia as it was a very average experience, go to Haro which much frendlier and is just down the road.

Room Tip: Room facing into the town

This hotel is located right in the centre of the small medieval town Lagaurdia which is in the heart of the Rioja wine district. We had booked one night stay but added another night thanks to the outstanding ambience, quality and location. The owner of the hotel is present and welcoming you and helping you to organize your activities and bookings to the various wine producers. The top producers are all around Laguardia. The restaurant is excellent and service very good. It is lovely to sit outside with a view to the little square and the tower clock with the play at every hour coming out playing. In the celler they have an extensive range of wines and you can enjoy meals and tasting as well.

We've read some of the comments about the courtyard facing rooms at this hotel and yes - they are right. We had booked these rooms and as soon as we saw them we knew we desperately wanted something else - and luck had it that superior rooms with jacuzzi - facing the Calle Major - were still available.
We did not suffer from any noise at night.

In general this is a great location - and Laguardia is a nice little town. Just across the hotel is a great wine selling shop - very friendly and enormous choice.

We only had breakfast at the hotel and it was tasty.

No issue either with the service which we found to be correct. We were well advised by reception for walks and visits. Just the lady checking us out did not seem to feel that smiling to customers is of any use. But maybe she had a bad day....

So: Overall quite happy with our stay. But then we had good rooms with plenty of light

What the room description fails to mention is that the rooms overlooking the internal courtyard are in fact facing onto a fully ENCLOSED internal courtyard, with no privacy or natural light- which means that you'll get to enjoy the artificial light in the hallway burning through your curtains all night long. Although this hotel is basically clean and comfortable, it somehow manages to feel thoroughly dark, airless and miserable!

Most hotel staff seem to actively loathe their guests and endeavour to get any interactions with them over with as soon as possible- although admittedly did lavish the time and effort on repeatedly humiliating us in front of other guests for minor faux pas (including coming in wet after a sudden downpour, sitting at the 'wrong' table at breakfast, helping ourselves to a glass of water- can you imagine!). The only time I almost detected a half-smile from the receptionist was when we reported for check out.

As for the restaurant- very basic amateur cooking with pretensions of being high end quality food- with the exorbitant and cynical price tag to match. We can only imagine that people ended up there because they were intimidated by the unfriendliness of some of the local bars and restaurants.

If there was ever any evidence of a growing anti-tourist sentiment in Spain, this is the hotel to experience it first hand! The only good thing about the place is the waiter and the barman, who were both very friendly and respectful, and never made us feel unwelcome.

We chose LaGuardia as a base to explore the Rioja wine region on a trip from Barcelona to San Sebastian. LaGuardia is a first rate historic town with Hotel Hospederia de los Parajes located in the centre of it all in the town square.

The hotel is sympathetic to its historic origins and includes an interesting underground bar and wine caves. The room was large & comfortable. The bathroom was unusual without a door, but still reasonably discrete.

I would definitely recommend this hotel as a base for any visit to the Rioja wine region.

Look it is a good hotel but there is nothing too special about it. The rooms are very very dark, it is clean . . . etc.

Service was overall poor and more to the point confusing. We could not get an answer to most of our questions and when we asked if we can check out 30 minutes late in a hotel that looked practically empty, there was no doubt that we will be getting that.

I would not try this hotel just because it is the best out of the 5 in la guardia, because you are not guaranteed the best service convenience and the room. I would stay in the second or the third best hotel in the city if they are cheaper because from what I can see they were not any worse.

We stayed here five nights and could not have been happier. Our room was spacious and modern. And you cannot beat the location for Rioja wine touring. We came back each day and just strolled through the town or had dinner at the hotel -- very relaxing. But the staff was the best part. From helping us find parking (you cannot drive right to the hotel, but the parking is a short walk), making us breakfast, serving us dinner, or providing recommendations, they were always friendly and fun. And the owner is as friendly and also very classy. We highly recommend this hotel if you are going to the Rioja region.

Room Tip: Our friends has a room overlooking the town square, but we preferred ours without a view because it...
