“Amazing experience”
Reviewed 7 December 2009

This is an old farm that was reconverted to "casa rural", with extremely good taste and sense of how to do an excellent decoration job, by the owner, Arantxa - she is very friendly and tells you everything about the places to visit, where to eat etc...
Our room was in the attic, with stone walls and wood in the ceiling, but very warm and comfortable. The bathroom was small, but nice (they don't provide amenities, so bring yours), the towels are soft and with a very nice smell.
The living room is cozy, with nice decoration and with fireplace. In Txopebenta you breathe harmony, peace and you can really relax. I think that, in that night, you were the only guests there, so it can be a little strange, but you sure have a nice time there. The only con was the proximity to the road, and it can disturb you, if have light sleep, but this was not our case, so no problem. You have free parking and a nice dog to guard your car :)
Arantxa cooks you a fantastic breakfast with cake, toasts with cheese, fresh butter, marmelade and freash yogurth.
The house is a little in the middle of no-where but i think this allows you to relax even more. It is located at 20km of Gernika-Lumo (must-see) and 5km of Elantxobe (small village in the coast) and the owner gives you maps and many indications of how to spend your time.

I read plenty of reviews that raved about this B&B, and most all of them were from Spanish people. As an American who lives in Europe and has traveled extensively here, I was very disappointed by this inn. It is pretty with the stones and the old wood, but the walls are paper thin (I could hear my children in the bathroom while I was eating breakfast downstairs). We were lucky in that other travelers did not arrive until our last night, VERY lucky because all 6 of them smoked at breakfast in this non-smoking inn. Sleeping was difficult every night becasue the Txopebenta sits RIGHT on the road, and there is plenty of traffic, even though it is set in the hills of the Basque country. Even with earlpugs, it was still loud until midnight and then starting early morning. (Yes, there are very old, pretty, single paned glass). As we went in low tourist season, we could not find a restaurant that was open until Friday night for dinner(we arrived on Wednesday), so make plans ahead of time. Our inn hostess sent us to places that were closed. I would have appreciated some research there.
We ended up leaving a day early (but we had to pay anyway because we booked through Secret Places) because our casa rural, our supposed quiet break from Madrid, was really the only negative part of our whole trip. We loved the beaches and the hikes and going into Bilbao and San Sebastian. But I do wish we had stayed elsewhere. Pretty just isn't enough.
