Hotel-Apartamentos de Montana Uson
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Hecho
Reviewed 16 July 2012

In our search for two of the iconic birds of the Pyrenees - Wallcreeper and Black Woodpecker - we learned that a very good site for both was the Val de Echo, centered on the town of Hecho, north of Jaca in Aragon. By entering "Hecho" in our hotel search we found the Hotel Uson, which was close by the Wallcreeper site (Gabardito refuge) and the Black Woodpecker site (Selva de Oza). Moreover, the hotel is surrounded by impressive mountain peaks and is less than a kilometer away from the scenic Boca del Infierno gorge.

The hotel itself is built in the traditional rock and wood style, and, in spite of being over twenty years old, looks brand new (as do many of the buildings in Aragon; it may have something to do with the rock). The well maintained rooms are ample in size and the beds are comfortable, which is not always true in Spain. The small balconies are good for looking out, but not for sitting. There is an open porch as well as a sun porch, but sadly they offer no view of the mountains at the time of the year we were there (mid-June) because of the leaves; we had to sit in chairs on the lawn to appreciate the fine views.

The hotel offers a couple of self-catering apartments, which would have been good for us in order get a real early start, as breakfast is not served until the usual time (in Spain) of 8 A.M. So we skipped breakfast on two of the mornings to get to the birds, and we were successful thanks to the explicit instructions of our hosts, Lucia and Manuel Carrera. We had to wait several hours for the Wallcreeper to come out of the Gabardito nest crevice for an incubation break, but the woodpecker was actively working an area just one kilometer north of the old campground just past the Boca del Infierno. The Boca also has Wallcreepers apparently, but walk - don't drive - in from the entrance to look for them. The road is very narrow, with limited area for two vehicles to pass.

An added benefit of this location was that we were easily able to drive over to the Roncal valley, via a cross-country route via Hecho, Anso and Zuriza. At the French border we saw several Lammergeiers and Ring Ouzel, two more birds of interest.

We had two dinners at the hotel and food was hearty and the portions ample, something that the numerous hikers staying at the hotel could well appreciate.

The hotel offers good value for money and was very convenient for our interests, but also appeals to hikers and, in the winter, cross-country skiers. We'd like to return and will contact them directly via their web site www.hoteluson.com to save them the onerous fees charged by the hotel booking web sites.

This is a small family run hotel and apartments set alone in a beautiful valley The husband & wife team are excellent providing great value and simple home cooking.
It is only about 7k from Hecho for general supplies.
The location is ideal for walkers and people with an interest in nature and especially birds

Idyllic location in the heart of the Hecho valley. The owners are clearly passionate about running this delightful rural hotel on a 'minimum human footprint' basis, which is very refreshing to see. The hotel is beautifully maintained and has a spacious diniing room and a delightful enclosed veranda with a small library. Very nice. The room I stayed in, while fairly basic, was perfectly adequate, with the notable exception of insufficient bed covers - it was pretty cool at night at the time of my visit (late September). However, I expect blankets would have been provided had I asked. I opted for the home-cooked evening meal, which was both delicious and filling - it's amazing how much you can eat when you've been out walking all day! Likewise, the continental style breakfast made for a good send off. All in all, Hotel Uson comes highly recommended, especially if you're planning a few days hiking in the surrounding mountains.

We first came across this wonderful mountain retreat in the Lonely Planet Guide and booked it via the hotel's website (mostly in Spanish) which is best found by doing a search for Hotel Rural Uson. The owners, Imanol and Lucia have built a magic hideaway and go out of their way to help you with advice on the huge variety of walks in the area and cook hearty meals to finish off your day. The rooms are basic, but clean and cosy with views that are simply astounding. Arriving here starts the process of winding the body and mind down and the stress of normal life seems a long long way away. We spent 4 nights here and thoroughly loved it. It was the second stop (after Barcelona) on a 2 week trip to Spain.......a huge contrast, but both equally inspiring in completely different ways, showing something of what this great country has to offer.
Other hotels visited were Grupotel Gravina, Barcelona; Can Cuadros Palouet Cantalunya, Sa Rascassa Aguiafreda Costa Brava & Hotel Bliss Begur Costa Brava

Great little family run hostel/hotel in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. Modern, comfortable rooms all en-suite. Feels a long way from anywhere, but is reasonably accessible from Jaca. Friendly owners make you feel at home and ply you with hearty local food and wine. Wondeful views from all rooms and fantastic walking opportunities all around.

This cracking little hotel has the most amazing situation near to the top the the Hecho Valley (nearest big town is Jaca).
Rooms are better than basic, clean if small, en suite etc, food is trad Basque mostly (owner and wife are Basques), but if that doesn't suit there are restaurants in nearby Hecho (about 5kms).
The hotel is surrounded by mountains, with at least 3 days walking available without having to once use a car.
Only thing I can't recommend is the packed lunch they offer to walkers, but I needed to lose weight anyway.
