A beautiful old palace restored in a quirky way. The restaurant is not up to much but is pretty good value if you are too tired to drive anywhere else. The joy of this area is trips up in the mountains which offer amazing views. The splash pool was great for the kids and is rare in hotels in this area. The family "cabin" apartment over the road from the main hotel was perfect for a family of four and good value.

An amazing historical building, worth a visit just to see the decor. We stayed 3 nights through Brittany ferries at the start of a tour in our motorhome. It was too good a deal to pass up as we had been recommended by a relative.
Room was good if a bit dark but the view made up for it. We ate in the restaurant in the eve but found the start time of 8.30pm a bit late for us. The menu was bit limited - maybe that was because we had the place virtually to ourselves. Breakfast up to 11am was very good and the service excellent.
The hotel has a rural location. We cycled around the area on one day and caught the bus -cheap and frequent- to Santander on another.
Several coach parties called by just to see the building only stopping for half an hour or so.
We would go again.

Room Tip: Go for the view

We had lunch twice in the restaurant . We enjoyed the choice of traditional Spanish peasant food, which suits our diet. The standard of service is very high. We did not notice any food out of tins and packets.
We chose a stew with beans and sausage, and a starter of gazpacho. There was a free aperitif , not so good for the diet, and home made chocolates to accompany the coffee. We were made to feel really welcome , in spite of not being resident at the hotel. On our second visit we chanced upon a troup of folk dancers performing in the doorway to celebrate a wedding, which made the occasion memorable.

Booked and paid for in advance through Brittany Ferries as the base for our car touring holiday, on arrival we wondered whether in fact we had only paid the deposit! As the ferry to Bilbao and 4 nights b&b had only cost £500 per couple. The service was terrific and the room and hotel decor magnificent. Breakfast was breathtaking with our table overloaded with bteads, cereals, pastries, fruit, cakes and even tortillia.
For us the hotel was ideally situated between the coast and mountains , ideal for touring , and the scenery was stunning. We didn't dine in the hotel preferring the less fomal setting of local establishments. The icing on the cake was getting up on our final morning to find a stage of a car rally ending outside the hotel. A brilliant stay!

This hotel has managed to escape the clutches of the major guide books but has found its way onto Trip Advisor and it was a great find. It is a small converted palace hence the name; but not sure what it has to do with Abba; We gather "abba" is prefix for a hotel chain and not a reference to a certain Swedish pop group.

The very best thing about the hotel is its location provided you have a car. It is located in the absolutely delightful and small village of Villacarriedo, about a 45-minute drive south of Santander. The reception staff are very friendly and helpful. The place has a large central staircase with stairs going in all directions leading to three floors. There is also a lift. We were in a room on the first floor which was very comfortable. The colours where a little bold but it has all the basics; and a lovely deep bath.

The country setting in green fields with mooing cows and tweeting morning birds was just lovely to wake up to. We were only there for a brief overnighter and had poor weather; but we reckon there would be lovely peaceful walks in fine weather.

It was great value for money at about 70 euros a night.

The only disappointment was the dining. We stayed for dinner and the actual dining room is done up in a very sumptuous style ready to greet King Juan Carlos. Regrettably the actual dinner was more suited to someone with the class of Donald Trump. We can only surmise but reckon there may not have even been a real cook out the back. Like another Trip Advisor critic has noted, the food seems to have all been pre-prepared and microwaved. The beef consume came straight out of the packet and my edible beef cheeks were ruined by a glutinous gravy slopped on by someone trained in the very worst of English cooking. The complimentary aperitif had heinz ketchup as the accompaniment. The price for the meal was excessive given the poor quality of the fare.

But let's keep perspective; you do not have to eat there; just down the road in the village is El Fogon; an authentic Spanish bar-restaurant; with great country spanish food and good wine and a cosy atmosphere. And yes they even had a fire place to justify the name. The service was friendly and very welcoming. El Fogon almost warrants its own review.

So if you combine your Palacio accommodation with great meals at El Fogon, you will have a wonderful time. In summary the Palacio is a great place to stay provided you have somewhere else to eat. But if they ever get their act together on the food front, their dining room would be a treat to eat in.

A beautiful 5* hotel in a rural setting! The hotel is located on the outskirts, the lobby has a wonderful luxurious feel in a country setting. The lobby´s decor is unexpected with bright, loud colours and comfy chairs. The stairwell, running through the centre, leads to an amazing domed ceiling. I loved it ... the reception staff were friendly and helpful!
