We decided to go to Donggala and to try Prince John resort and were not disappointed at all.
We spent 6 nights in total and felt like we could have stayed more. Probably because we spent most of the time diving and studying our PADI OWD certificate which we obtained in this same resort and in 3 days!
The resort is very secluded in a quite area beyond Donggala. The taxi from Palu airport takes about an hour (around 20 USD)
As we arrived we felt that the atmosphere there was very calm. We had a drink enjoying the beach area and bar while we waited for our bungalow to be assigned.
The reception is inside the beach bar.
Bungalows are all built along 300m approx of coast so be prepared to walk if your designated bungalow is one of the further ones.
The bungalow was a wooden one with lovely views to the bay. It was a little bit aged but very comfortable and clean. However be prepared to encounter geckos and some insects (you are a stranger in their home and not viceversa) The bathroom had a toilet, a mirror and an open water tank of sorts. Water was clean but cold and was refilled daily.
Bungalow was cleaned daily too.
There was a hammock on the terrace of the bungalow and complimentary insect repellent/candles.
Also bring a torch to help to make your way home through the path after dinner or drinks. There are lights along the path but they are not bright enough to see the hermit crabs that can get squished underfoot.
We thought the food was outstanding (we love fish and there was fish almost every day for lunch and dinner, also chicken and veggie options) the kitchen was spotlessly clean (it almost looked like a laboratory) and the service was very attentive and friendly. 3 meals and a snack and coffee included in the price was definitely a star up in the overall rating.
But one of the main reasons for this resort is the diving and snorkeling. We did our PADI certificate course during our stay and we will never forget the experience. Staff and equipment are very professional and everyone is very friendly. The diving areas were superb for a beginner (you cannot begin to compare doing your basic skills at this wonderful house coral reef with a swimming pool or a lake in Europe).
