Where I’ve found the Dream of my Lifetime
After a week on Bunaken I found the resort by coincidence during a longer hike through the island and stepped more or less in through the backyard. Inspired by the welcoming staff, its location, the design of the bungalows and the beautiful sunset scenery I did not hesitate to extend my stay for another 10 days and moved in the next day.
The bungalow was spacey with a nice bathroom and designed in such a way to feel in this tropical environment at home immediately. In particular the large veranda with a stunning view over the ocean and equipped with a hammock invited for relaxation during the evening hours. The service was excellent, all equipment functioning and the rooms immaculate clean. Laptops and a well function wifi connection made it possible to download photos and communicate or work without any hassle or additional cost.
The varied food served in time in the restaurant overlooking the ocean was varied, tasty and its quantities generous. Drinking water, coffee, tea were available at any time as a complementary. The staff maintained its friendliness throughout the entire stay and was very helpful and caring.
The resort turned out to be not only a good base for excellent diving and snorkelling in the middle of the marine park but also to explore other interesting places outside the island world including the different culture and natural environments of North Sulawesi. A varied program and activities accordingly were tailored and organised by the resort.
The design and management of the resort enables the visitor to reduce his ecological footprint during the stay. That way the Bunaken island resort is taking the lead and showing the way forward for others to conserve the surrounding fragile marine ecosystem for divers to enjoy in the long future. Last but not least the designer of the resort’s website holds its promises and reflects the reality on the ground.

We were planning to stay on Bunaken for not more than a week, but ended up staying there for over 2 weeks because of the perfect accommodation and dive facilities we found at Bunaken Island Resort. The bungalows are all spacious, well designed, nicely decorated and spotless - thanks Leon! - and ours had a million dollar view with Buddha watching over us. It's great value for money and I can highly recommend staying here if you want to dive the area. Sven, who operates the dive centre, and his team are highly skilled and knowledgeable divers. The equipment is all new and the boats comfortable (good sunbathing on the roof;-).
The only reason why we do not mark the resort with 'excellent' is because at the time of our stay the restaurant was still under construction and we had to walk to the neighbours each time we craved a beer. The day we left the restaurant opened and it looks great with a spectacular setting overlooking the ocean. So I'm sure that next time we'll visit (which we are certainly planning on doing) our rating will be 'excellent'.

I was there for 4 weeks in February. My room was spotless and well made up every day, it was spacious and reflected the traditional Minahasan building style. I had the most amazing view from my balcony of any place I have ever stayed in ( see my pictures) and I had all my windows open for the sea breeze. And even though it was equipped with air-con, I never bothered with it. The location of the resort is above the beach so there are stairs that will take you up with a little walking.

I really enjoyed the food that was cooked in the local style and served to us every day. It was delicious and there was always enough. The staff are friendly and helpful and there was always a lot of laughter amongst guests and the staff

As with any new resort, there are growing pains but I'm trying to think of anything that really impacted me in a negative way and honestly, I am at a loss to find anything. Oh yea, the beer wasn't always cold but that's about it. This was my experience at Bunaken Island Resort and if you go I hope you find that it is yours too. I was really sorry to have to leave.
