Let's start by saying that we probably aren't the typical visitors to the Kalinaun. I have never dived let alone taken photos underwater and I think this is the intended visitor to the Kalinaun.
We were there for the beach, to unwind and we had a two year old in tow. My wife speaks fluent Indonesian and we have traveled around Indonesia over the past five years so we are used to relaxed and hands-off, but this was a bit too hands-off even for us. The proprietors were really only interested in the party of 18 Italian diver-photographers arriving a few days from when we left and the only conversations with us were to try to get us to visit another "resort" around the bay (EUR100 charge for this "excursion") and when we were paying the bill. Let's talk about the bill for a second.
Room rate included food - excellent value. Add aircon (EUR20 per night), the transfers (EUR20 each way in an un-airconditioned 4x4, the 2nd leg being their journey to the market for groceries - very eco-friendly but not very comfortable for us) plus an extra EUR20 charge to drive us to the local store to buy some Bintang because they had run out. Really? What started our "reasonable" now bordered on the Datai!
On the positive side, a great little chalet, hot running water, and great scenery. The food was good - not brilliant, but plentiful. I particularly enjoyed the fresh fish and fresh fruit. The service from the caretaker Harry was friendly enough as well as from the main waitress although what we ate was dictated by what was available - they ran out of eggs, many of the meat dishes were not available. However, what we ate was tasty enough.
We were looking forward to relaxing on the beach but unfortunately the beach was quite unappealing, until we took it upon ourselves to ask Harry to clean up the weeds and the debris. No umbrellas, no loungers (they were being fixed).
I wouldn't recommend on the whole, unless you're a diver and you spend little time on the shore. From the half day snorkling (EUR100) that I did the underwater life was amazing. It's a shame what was found back on land wasn't.
